New Transmission

Well, I had the shakes (my Fj) and it turns out that it needs a new Torque Converter along with some other moving parts (basically a new tranny). I read in the blue room about others with this type of problem and I'm glad that my dealership came to that conclusion after talking to the toyota tech. The insurance company is sending out an inspector tomorrow but all should be ok. Even though I have the snorkel its never been submerged and I have kept up on the fluid changes, also if for some reason they want to bring up the 3" Rev tek lift and 285 tire size I actually bought it new from the Toyota dealership set up like that. Just thought I would let you all know to look out for this if you had not heard of this problem happening to some of us.

Mine had the shakes also. After towing my trailer to Pismo and back (4500 lbs) it mysteriously stopped shaking. I don't know what that is all about. Hope I don't have to get a tranny soon.

Mine started getting the shakes a couple weeks ago. It only seems to happen around 40 mph...I was thinking it was just the tires, but it might be the tranny going. I'm not surprised though...150k.

If caught early enough I believe it can be fixed with just a new Torque Converter, seems like that fixed the issue for some in the Blue Room. They switched mine because they didn't like that the gears were switching back in forth and not staying in the lockout mode and something about metal on metal somewhere. So if it just started try a new TQ, if not good luck, total for mine was around 5k $'s.

I did a ATF change yesterday.,,$150 just for the fluid...did it myself by following the instructions on the blue room. Running smooth now...should have changed the fluid at 100k. I was living under the impression that the AT is a sealed unit and the fluid didn't need changing. Don't believe it! It's really an easy diy project. I think my shutter was caused by old, worn out fluid causing the torque converter to slip around 40mph. The most important thing is to buy Toyota ATF WS fluid...yes it's expensive...but its designed specifically for Toyota transmissions. I currently have 157k on my Fj and I've done "all" the maintenance myself. I'm proof that Toyota's are easy to work on and if you do regular maintenance they will last forever! Knock on wood!
