So you picked up a radio and when you key the mic you have the urge to start talking like a Southern Trucker from the south. While being behind the mic does tend to bring that out in most of us myself included, but talking like the Bandit on the radio gets to be annoying.

Do you really need to talk about having the hammer down out their on the super slab while your wall to wall and tree top tall. Or that it's a big 10-4 that your going 10-9 for that 10-100 then a 10-22.

Did you understand any of that? Probably not and while I and other are affectionatos of Trucker slang and police 10 codes in the real world it's confusing and can be dangerous depending on the sitution. While on the trail communcations should be clear messaging so that there is no confusion on what the meaning is. This is espcially true when giving direction or relaying messages between parties. If it's a urgent or dangerous sitution it's better to talk slow calm and clear to get the message across the first time with little confusion.

Now I'm not saying don't have fun just use your best judgement. If your on a long convoy messing around on the radio is a good time waster, just make sure to keep it short so if someone needs to break in with information they can without issues.

good post! i think a lot of the incidents we've experienced (e.g. the commentator, the disc jockey, etc.) have just been a lack of exposure to communications on the trail, so i hope this post helps identify the need to maintain a certain amount of decorum whilst out on the trails and on the roads to them.

probably one of the best banter that follows etiquette was some experienced on the Moab 2010 drive. longer transmissions were interspersed with frequent breaks to allow others to "breaker" in if needed and the banter back and forth was short and to the point.
