Welcome to the NorCal FJs Comms Group

This group is geared towards off-road and group communications, whether it be Amateur Radio (HAM), GMRS, FRS or CB. The group’s mission is to increase overall communications knowledge, provide member collaboration opportunities and standardize communication channels and operations at large events and trail runs.

One of the biggest challenges in off-road logistics is communications. It’s the “who has what type of radio.” While not everyone is a HAM yet, this group will encourage further adoption of HAM radio as a primary source of communications for the NorCal FJs. It’s easy to get a license and and it opens up a world of possibilities for communications. At the same time we know some folks just don’t want to go the HAM route, so we are not going to be HAM elitist – just understand that there is only a limited amount you can do with CB or FRS.

Goals
1) Education of good radio practices
2) Focus on Amateur Radio Licensing
3) Equipment reviews by users
4) Installation guides
5) Field Exercises and Testing
6) Frequency Coordination for Trail Runs and events
7) Having fun with another potentially expensive hobby

I have created a new form on Google Docs(Drive) to compile a list of HAMs within the NorCal FJs.  If you look at the pages box on the right you will see the link HAM Operator List - Google Docs form this will take you to both the form link and the results link.

Check out LandOps.com...anyone here interested in doing something like this? Watch the Land Ops Episode 1 video. It would be good coms practice and a lot of fun. It could also promote ham radio in the group so they could participate in roles of the exercises where frs and cb don't have enough range.

Damn your pushy, I show up out of the blue after months of being offline and you expect me to do something.

That is one of my goals, I'm going to build a new google docs form that people can update and I will then update the list there.

Any chance of updating the "Ham Operators List?" There are only two names on there.

Brushing away the tumbleweeds it's been really quiet over here. I'm working on some plans to incorporate some radio training with off-roading next year.
