FJ Cruisers of Northern California

Just throwing this out there because I've had it on my mind for some time. I know a trip to Baja would require some planning and maybe even someone with experience on the political side, but food for thought.

yep, if you talk to the mexicans who live down there, just stay away from a few select border towns where there is all out war between rival cartels trying control the smugglers port, other than that, it's business as usual and you need to take normal precautions as you would traveling anywhere.

I did drive with a few mexican family members from Mexico City to Acapulco to Ixtapa. While driving across the mexcian country side, we went through a 1 intersection town and it was road blocked with a bunch of ak-47 toten mexicans with camo pants and gold necklaces, anyways they stopped us, made us exit the car while they searched it and then wouldn't let us continue on our route, made us go another way, in the end, we ended up getting out of the mess because I had the family members who new the gig down there, imo the precautionary measures would be to take a mexican ;-)

Yeah.. NO... Not on a bet :(

Just got back from Baja. If you're gonna go, plan your trip to take place at the same time as the SCORE 1K. There's a ton of Americans down there if you should need any help. It was a great trip and I never felt insecure.

"(you must be very careful if bringing a sidearm)" - DON'T bring a side arm, or even a single shot gun shell. You cannot possess a firearm in Mexico. You will go to jail.

If you drive the length of Baja you will go through a dozen military check points (both directions) where they are looking for guns and drugs. You don't want to be caught with one. One of my friends had a shot gun shell in his glove box left over from a dove hunt. The military emptied his truck out on the roadside looking for the shotgun. They never found it but it delayed him three hours. The military check points shouldn't be a point of concern, just don't take any guns or knives.

What's up Doc? We need to get out on a run together sometime, let me know if you are ever heading out to the dez, I've been going out there a lot lately.

x2 on firearms and ammo--don't bring them. Heading South, they are looking for people smuggling guns, ammo and cash back to Mex from the US. A good attitude, cold drinks and "steekers" will get you through checkpoints easily.

Exactly, we went through 5 cases of energy drinks and hundreds of steekers. The only military check point that we didn't fly through was the last one after we ran out of free-bees. I had to empty the truck out so that they could look through the pit box.

Pics from Playa Requeson in the Bahia de Conception.
