FJ Cruisers of Northern California

Sorry guys but due to the extreme weather coming at us, it looks like the best thing to do is to cancel this trip & try again in a couple months.  Thanks for all the great trail ideas, everyone.  This will give us a little more time to check out possible runs & make some solid plans.

Looks like we have some interest in wheeling either the 27th or 28th of December.  I'm not really sure where we'll go wheeling yet.  There are some suggestions in the discussion.  Anyone w/ pointers about where the best places to go would be given the snow.

So far, the suggestions are:

the Virginia City area (CV Kurt, can you get the trail names from the Battle Born Cruisers?)

?unknown? (TOE 4x4, you mentioned you had some trails in mind.  Please share.)

Middlegate Station (Click here for map provided by John from BozTec)

Washoe Valley (Estysalinas, please provide coordinates if you have them)

Crystal Peak & trails nearby (FJ Scout, need coordinates please)

If there's any other spots we should be thinking about or if you have reasons why any of these should be eliminated, speak up.

Ghost & I are thinking about cruising up this Saturday morning to scout out some of the locations above.  Before then, we'll check the TTORA site to see if there's any trails still open in the area.

Found a pretty cool site with a few local trails... http://www.trails.com/activity.aspx?area=15726

Thanks,

John

Ditto

Put me down as a maybe for the 27th-29th

I can't make this one.  Had to accept some crappy 31" tires to get the dealer to give me the Black TTE wheels.  So wont be getting new tires til the end of january and probably a 6" lift.  Will be down for just about anything then.

you'd be surprised what the FJ can do stock.

Its not that theyre stock size.  they are just in pretty rough shape.  they were put on there just to get me around for a month and a half till i could get new tires.

We're in Reno from the 22nd to the 28th, but have to leave on the 28th. 27th would be cool, but we could leave late the 28th if that date is picked.

I'd normally be all over this, but already planned a trip. I'd recommend checking out Crystal Peak and adjoining trails.
Happy Holidays.

Ok so, I am going to organize this thread tonight with more details...it's looks like people want to wheel on either the 27th or 28th.  Now we just need to find a trail that's open.  I am willing to go out there this weekend to scout out a few of the trails suggested on this thread.  anyone else down for scouting this weekend???

Glad to see you posted to BBCNN forum.   I think I'll defer to them for trail recommendations.   If you have any other questions (such as where to get good beer, good BBQ, GPS coordinates of any location mentioned), please feel free to send me a PM.

Here is the general area I was thinking about:

There are two big campgrounds, one by the lake and another further east up in the foothills (has a decent group campground). Dispersed camping would probably be available all around, would need to do some research to get the best sites.  This is very close to the area that CV Kurt was mentioning.

This trail goes up the Jumbo Grade.  Suitability will depend greatly on how much snow/rain we get between now and the trail run.   There may be trails will fair better than others in this area, which is why I defer to the more experienced locals in making a specific recommendation.

At the bottom of the trail you have marked there is a graded parking lot w/ toilets for OHV'ers.

As you note, there is an improved campground along the south eastern shore of Washoe Lake.  This is part of the Washoe Lake State Park, and includes a group campground. This campground is open year round.

The other improved campground I think you refer to is in the Davis Creek Regional Park (which is actually further north north west from the Washoe Lake state park).  This campground is also open year round.

Bozly already mentioned it.
