FJ Cruisers of Northern California

Been doing a bunch of research on racks.  Wanted to inform folks that baja is making a rack special order that is not on there site.  It is made specifically for the maggiolina RTT but gives a nice low profile canvas to do whatever you might want.  Anyway thought I would post some info on it since it is not readily availalbe (i contacted them directly after reading about it elsewhere).  Think this might be what I go with.

1.       BR-TYFJMG-S-1-0: Our ‘standard’ BajaRack for the FJ Cruiser and small Maggiolina tent measures 91” long x 51” wide (flat area 86” long), and weighs 55 lbs.  It costs $645.00.

2.       BR-TYFJMG-M-1-0: Our ‘wide’ BajaRack for the FJ Cruiser and medium Maggiolina tent measures 91” long x 55” wide (flat area 86” long), and weighs 70 lbs.  It costs $675.00.

Looks like they took their Expedition Roof Rack and completely did away with any side walls in the front.
Sorry to sound like Buzzkillington but,

My take is: Why buy a rack that is useless for hauling stuff? Perhaps, if it had side, front and Rear walls that collapsed when needed... guess I am just not a fan of roof top tents. For $1300 I would invest in a Total Chao or some Icons.

With that said, I paid too much for my Waag insert Basket. I was cruising the So-Cal site a little time buying my Waag Basket and saw this post for a $60. http://www.socalfjcruiserforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=5772&am...
I suppose it depends on how you use your FJ. Expedition use, roof top tents are mighty nice. Rock crawling, not so much. It also depends on how much demand there is for comfort in your party. I for one would love the comfort of a roof top tent, but am still not convinced I won't turn my rig into an expedition vehicle in the future.

It's all relative to one's needs...and limits.
No worries no buzzkill here. I appreciate the comments. I have gone back and forth with basket type vs flat and i think i have come to the determination that for me the flat will offer more flexibility. No walls does not mean I cannot haul things. In fact for things like a few sheets of dry wall or plywood it may be easier. Nothing a few ratchet straps could not keep in place. I am also thinking if a basket becomes a requirment I could always strap cheap coleman basket down. If I decide to go down the RTT road in the future I will have the flexibility to choose and it will sit very low compared to others.

i have not fully decided, but am leaning this direction. thanks for the reply
Something else to consider: How do you load any rack? Do you just throw an item in the rack an hope that the sides will keep the item in? I hope not. You strap it down just like you would on a rtt rack.

Just my thoughts
they have come out with a new design that I like even more.

Lance;

Baja is building me a custom rack that I designed based on their new low profile rack. Mine will have a forward section with sides and a built in light bar. Shoot me an email at fjgino@gmail.com and I'll email you some screen shots of my 3D model of the rack.
