Help Y-Pipe nuts will not tighten
Hi yall, I just installed a URD Y pipe and after I got it in and I started the nuts by hand to make sure not to cross thread. I tightened it as far as I can but can not get it to tighten flush. I have major exhaust leaks. I did put new gaskets on. It is just I can not tighten the nuts. Any Idea's??

The threads are galled more than likely. it's the studs that come out of the flanges right below the cats right?
Upon reinstall mine did the same thing and I ended up replacing the studs. Easy to do but there is a little trick, and a special socket to get them out.

Yes, Thats what I think it is too. What is the trick? I am a drive way tech. I was going to drive it over to the 76 station, I know the tech their. I was going to see if he could tighten them up for me. Do I need new studs? How do I get them? Are you the same one from BozTec? I like the rear diff skid. Just wondering.

Tighten two nuts against each other on the stud. Place wrench on nut close to flange. Remove.

If you dont have to drive to far shouldn't be a big deal, if it's a ways there could be an issue with cool air sucking back in the leak and warping the heads.
The two nuts should work as 5andy said but if you have to go get them the socket is maybe just as easy, and then you'll have it to rent to all your friends when this happens to them.
Go to Toyota and get 4 new studs. No reason not to replace them all cuz heat and metal cause lots of problems esp when threads are involved. Tell them the joint you are talking about and they know exactly what to give you.
Here is the trick.
Get a propane torch and heat the flange up around where the stud goes in. Not red hot but a few minutes moving it around should do. Alternate between the two and get the flange nice and warm, too hot to touch, and here is the trick. TURN THE TORCH OFF after the flange is hot and spray WD40 at the joint between the flange and stud. Not half a can but a couple of good blasts should do and let it cool off for a while. 10 or 15 minutes is probably enough and then put the special socket on the end of the stud and back it out. Should come right out. When you install the new ones put some high temp anti seize on the threads, both sides, and that way you wont bugger the threads going into the flange or when you put the nut back on and with some luck, next time you need to remove the joint it will come apart easier.
Thats what I did and was amazed how easy the stud came out. Once it galled we were using an impact gun trying to get the nut off and the stud never budged but once I applied the heat and WD40 they backed right out. The hot metal sucks the WD40 into the threads and makes "everything greasy so it goes in eassy"

Cool. But I do not own a tourch. My FJ is my only ride and Toyota is 40mins there and back. I am in a jam. The tech at 76 wich is only a block away might have a way to get the studs. He will let me use his bay for 15mins. I will let you all know 2maro. Thank you for the help anyway.
I got to get a torch, next on list.

The studs are $7.95 each and will take a day or three to get them. I went to my buds shop at 76 and his aircompressor is busted, so no lift in the shop or air.

Is there another dealer in the area, or anywhere, that has them? Service can tell that and you could have them shipped right to you.

I took the FJ for servise to see if they could tighten. They could not. They said its as far as it will go. I know thats a lie cuz I got one in all the way. Now because they used an inpact I can not do anything with the tools I have. My break bar (Snap On) bends when I try to loosen. My hands are in the Air. The other shop down the street wants 2hrs or more to fix it. There goes my sPOD money. I hope they will hold it for me for a week or two. How can 4 nuts be such a pain? The URD Y-Pipe is a very nice looking pipe and looks well made. I can not wait to hear what it sounds like.

Y-Pipe in and perfect. $195.00 at Toyota of Stevens Creek. Kick ASS people over their, for real. It took three techs, a can of WD40, a tourch, 6 bits and a tap/die set. 3 Tech's because of the hard metal studs. It was damm hard to hold the drill above your head for an hour and a half. I couldn't do it. ( Two of the studs snaped while taking them off. ) I was very thankful and embarrassed but that’s what I get for being under tooled and in a hurry.
