FJ Cruisers of Northern California

Hi, I had another flat tire last weekend while I was exploring the area near the 108 (by the way - that place is fantastic!)

Three of the tires I have right now are very used (and are still the stock ones).

I have a possible solution in mind: Nitto Terra Grappler AT 285/75R16 (I have 16" rims)

Any advice? I do not think I need MT tires, after all I do not do much rock crawling, most of my trips are just in very remote areas in Death Valley or other deserts, but of course I do not want to get something that would not allow to enjoy Moab a little, for example.

bye! Thanks
Alessio

Nitto Terra Grappler 285/75/16 E rated $188 each.

I like my Terra Grapplers, they've performed well offroad and on. Discount Tire will probably give you an additional discount when you call them if you buy 5 and ask for the blue room discount. I paid $1000 even for 5 285/75/17's delivered to my installer which worked out to over $100 off their website.
$189.99 for the E rated at 4WP, which is what I was quoting from DTD. The D rated at DTD are $170. Just go with whoever quotes you the best price out the door (or delivered) for whatever you decide. That's if you aren't impulsive like I am and just want to pick em up right away locally.
I am not impulsive at all. I started almost one year ago to plan for the new set of tires. But I have not decided yet...
I was going to get the Nitto Terra Grapplers but the warehouse I was going through was back ordered. The NTG has a very good reputation.

The MillenWorks FJ had no flats and finished the SCORE Baja 500 with the same off-the-shelf Nitto Terra Grapplers it started with.
“Really we could of run the exact same tires over and over again in all the race's, but Nitto wanted them back for R&D. We raced all session with off the shelf NTG and only had 2 flats (@ Baja 1000). Well one was a leak because the rim and the other one had a bubble on the side from a really hard side impact. It held air but we changed it anyway, in fact we have the exact same spare on the truck that we started with at the start of the season, we never needed to use it. hahaha... great tires!”

I think ray gates is running 295/70/17 NTG, he said he has no problems w/ the size. His tires worked very good on slick rock trail.
I see, my experience on Slickrock was quite depressing this time!
Thanks for the info. Do you know what size they were using there? Were they using special rims?
wheels look like an KMC Enduro w/ bead lock
correction, it was the Team Donahoe FJ that ran NTG, MillenWorks ran the BFG A/T

Hah! I was surprised as well to hear Millen without BFG.Guess that straightens that out. Manoweb don't be depressed about Slick-rock! You do need new tires, and some of us commented on that from the sidelines while you were struggling on the last rock, but most of the FJ people and the rolled jeep would have stayed till dark if you wanted to keep trying. We had fun trying to help and offer encouragement. That huge rock in the way made things tough and that's why we went. I couldn't get over the same darned ledge without bending both a lower control arm and a LCA skid plate. I need new tires too and have also taken forever to decide. I run 305s and really like the size but, as someone else said, the road chews up mud terrains fast.
MillenWorks never ran Nittos. We have always run BFG's.
Yes he corrected it, it was Donahoe. Now, as Nitto was a prominent Donahoe sponsor, they cannot really have a public bad opinion on those tires, but after so much research it seems Nittos should be good for my needs.
So I think I set my mind on Nitto Terra Grapplers 295/75R16 (D rating)
I hope it will be a good choice for the kind of adventures I like. They will probably be much better that the "BFG Rugger Trail" tires that came stock with the FJ.
