Hey guys and gals, my buddy gave me a CB radio today and I could use some help. It's a Midland 1001z. All I got was the unit, microphone, and power/ground wires as pictured. I'm guessing I just need to get an antenna w/ mount, and the cable to run to it? Is there a spot in the fuse box to run the power to or where would you recommend? Also when I was at the AllCal meet I saw many of you had antenna mounts that replaced part of the rear door hinge. Where can I purchase one of those? Whats a good antenna? and how did you guys run your wires? Any help would be gratefully appreciated!

Running the cable is easy, you can use your antenna to guide it through the side panels. I learned this trick from Bz, use your new CB antenna or unscrew your radio antenna and tape the coax to it.
You may want to start w/ more them 18' of coax. Silly me, I bought the min recommended length on the antenna package, 18' was just enough to run from the back, along the left side, then under the driver seat to the center console.
The med duty spring may be good enough for a 3', to play it safe you may want a heavy. I lost my antenna because the med was swinging around so much.

Thanks guys, once I get this project rolling Ill be in touch about the SWR. So this guys dosen't carry the 3' Firestik, but he has a 3' Wilson silver Load. Is the Wilson good? He is only asking $17 for it.

I routed mine through the rubber grommet just below the mount leading to the car from the rear door. The wire easily enters from there into the jack compartment. I then fed the wire using a wire snake (I'm sure an antenna or coat hanger or something would work as well) from that compartment over the wheel well inside the wall to where it popped out under the door sill on the drivers side. I had removed the plastic door sill at the entrance to the drivers side, as well as the center console between the seats, prior to running the coax. It was a bit intimidating at first, but was really quite easy and clean looking overall. My goal was to completely hide the wire and I was successful. I had planned on using instructions I found on the blue room to route the wire, but they would have required me to drill a hole through the floor and I didn't want to do that. Instead, the coax runs between the plastic and the wall from the back, over the wheel well, under the plastic sill at the step into the cab, under the floor-mat beneath the drivers seat, and into the center console. The wiring was all done under the console, so no cables ore wires are visible in the cab except for the quick release in the center console box. THe instructions and photos for removing the center console I found on the blue room were quite helpful.

Hey, due to some clearance issues at my apt, would a 2' antenna be worthless or should I just get the 3' with the quick disco?

So I keep hearing from people to not use the quick disco with a spring. Since I will have clearance issues where I live and probable will just use the Cb on trails and long trips, should I just get the spring and remove/install the antenna when I need it? Will that cause the antenna to get un-tuned each time I remove it or should I be fine? or should I just get the quick disco with no spring? I'm planning on getting the 4 foot Firestik II by the way.

I would get the quick disconnect and medium spring. Re-tuning will not be required each time. I have the Q-Dis above the spring which makes for easy disconnecting and storage.

Don't know of anyone having issues with the disconnect or spring. I've got both & would recommend both (I've got the heavy spring). Either way you won't need to re-tune after taking it off & on many times. At least I've never had an issue.I've got the QD blelow the spring - no problems.
Just so you know, my firestick whistles on the freeway. Just need to adjust your noise cancelling knob on your dash.
