FJ Cruisers of Northern California

Alright, so I just got this new offroad trailer (Chaser by Adventure trailers), and this thing is just plain awesome on and off road.

But... the FJ now could use some help in the power and GPM department.

Climbing hills and passing slow campers become a little of an issue as covering distances as well.

I basically now can only do about 200 miles on a tank on the road, kind of suck.

So, I went and explore around, and sure enough, there are all kinds of posts about chips, supercharge kits, and all, but with a lot of confusing if not contradictory information.

What I am looking at, is basically what would give me the best power/gas management for the money that will help my tow? Any experience and suggestions from you guys? I know some of you have explore this more in depth and know this subject better then me :o)

Can't wait for Toyota to give us a diesel option :o)

Well a super charger would give you the power that yoru looking for but unless you stay out of the gas your Distance on a tank would surely not improve. Of course if you can keep your foot out of the gas there may not be as big of an inpact.

A chip would also work cuz your letting the computer "tune" the engine as you drive it and it reacts to the condsitions that it put under at that time.

Also a chip would be much less $$..

Not sure which (if any) is better but if $$ is an issue than maybe a chip is better. I have not heard anything negitive about the chip but I am sure there is something..
From a basic math/energy standpoint you're not going to find what you're looking for. You're getting more "work" and you gotta pay.
I totally understand that in general more power means more gas, except that I think there is balancing act that can take place. Right now if I want to make it up the hill at a decent speed, I need my foot on the floor (more gas), but if I had more power, I would not need to push so hard on the accelerator (less gas). So, I think, and that is just my opinion and it still needs to be validated, if I keep on driving smart (no lead foot), adding power could potentially increase my gas mileage, or at least not reducing it even further. The chip seems a good all around solution, but then which one???? The supercharge I do not know? Proce versus performance may not be a huge advantage? Do not know. In addition, would a better air intake help as well? Should... right? Are they worth the additional cost?
I meant price versus performance. All this is because I do not know enough about it all and would hate to spend a bunch of money to find out that at the end it really did not help. If power can get better without affecting my mileage even further, then I guess I can always look into putting a bigger gas tank :o)
I hear that. I guess my point is you might break even on the cost so why bother?
How heavy is that thing. I two my M416 and my Tent trailer with the FJ and I feel it tows real well with both. Even going over the grapevine with the Tent trailer I did not find it to be "that bad" going over. Of course my tent trailer is about 1500 lbs dry witha gross of 2000 lbs. Is you trailer is heavier than that ??

I believe an Air intake would improve things a bit. Think of your engine as a big air compressor. The better air can flow the more easily it can produce power..
Probably the best answer is to change the way you drive. Dropping 10 mph on the hiway will do wonders. The speed limit while towing is 55 anyway

I think Sonof40 is right. Whatever you do to gain more power, will use more fuel. That is where the power comes from.
Look into a APR-X1 by Allan Philipps Racing, it's also an electronic. I'd say do a supercharger and get the Man-A-Fre Gas tank. With this set-up, you'll get the most HP/Torque and the fuel capacity you need.
What do you think of that aux tank? I tried to contact them to have more info but got only an answer like "I will put you in contact with a sales rep" but then nothing...
