FJ Cruisers of Northern California

Trail Description

There is a trail that I travel several times each year and I am organizing a group run this year as I have done in the past. If you have been waiting for a “Newbee Run”, this is a good choice. The trail is not difficult, but there are three parts I would say were moderate and there are options to bypass two of those. The third obstacle is a short rock garden and there is no bypass on this one. I have done these on my own with my stock FJ a number of times and not had any problems. As on any trail, there is always risk of damage.

A map of the area can be found at the following website http://www.fs.fed.us/r5/eldorado/recreation/travel/index.shtml

The map is named “Placerville Ranger District Map - Side 2” (MVUMPlacervilleSide02.pdf) and the trail head coordinates are approximately: 38 45 N  120 15 W

After the Long Canyon Trail, there is another very easy trail nearby that has some very nice scenery called Cody 4wd trail. We can do that one as well as time and interest allows. Allow 6 to 8 hours of drive time round trip from Cameron Park and back.

It looks like 6/26 is the date.

Post if you are interested.

Trail Meeting Point and Directions:

Time: 9:00, leave at 9:15.

A good meeting point is the Safeway parking lot in Cameron Park. The address is actually Shingle Springs on most map software.

3380 Coach Ln, Shingle Springs, CA 95682

This should give us plenty of space and a place to pick up any last minute items.

The cheapest gas is at the ARCO-AM/PM off of the Cambridge exit in Cameron Park, or Costco in Folsom.

If you are running late and miss us, getting to the trail is easy.

Continue up Hwy 50 toward Tahoe, just past Kyburz (about 30 min. from Cameron Park) take a right on Silverfork Road

A few miles up Silverfork Road, just past mile marker 3, take a left on Long Canyon trail (dirt road). There is a sign on the right side of Silverfork road.

Communication:

CB - Ch 31

FRS - 7/31

HAM – Repeater for emergencies AG6AU, 147.8250, -600kHz offset, PL 82.5

HAM – General Communication – 145.550 PL 100, Simplex, to be verified on the trail

Mobile phones do not work well in the trail area.

Be prepared for changeable weather.

05/11/10 Added China Flat Campground info, see attached file.

06/12/10 Since there are quite a few people signed up, the trip will take longer than the 8 hours previously stated.

06/18/10 In addition to China Flat Campground, There is also Silverfork Campground. I think Silverfork is the larger one.

I hope this melts before the end of June.

I hope so too. I've already missed one El Dorado N.F. trip this year due to the white stuff!
would it be ok for my younger brother to tag along.....he doesnt have a fjc he wants one but would be buying a 85 toyota pick up...........let me know if its ok so he knows to buy the truck or not.....we do alot together and it would be nice if he could come....

hey Cha, all our runs are open to all makes and models...we welcome all provided they tread lightly and follow the code of conduct, which is essentially common sense. the only issue may be spare parts. we usually carry trail spares with us, but they wouldn't work on an '85 pick up, so he'd want to make sure his rig is trail worthy before joining in on the run.
We even let Jeeps tag along once in a while.
Ok kool...just thought i ask first....yeah he'll do wateva i tell him and he is a good guy....after i got my fj...he wanted one too but couldnt afford it..the whole spare parts issue is why i was askin too....seein how its a go.....he'll prob buy it this weekend so we can prep and see what might be needed........but it should be ok.....buyin it from a friend...its lifted with 33" tires and runs well...now just waitin for snow to melt.......thanks again

Going to make this run, will go early to get a site for me and my trailer, looking forward to seeing you all,

Jim
We have tried to access Wright lake via Ice House Road last weekend and this weekend. Tonight I pulled a small dodge something out of a bump of snow. We make it to mile pt 11.5. Snow is melting very fast. But there are a few large drifts around. Off the main roads paved or dirt is gets messy quick. Saw no downed trees on any roads we traveled. No bugs either.

If we made to Wrights Lake we were going to take a run at Long Canyon. But ... So we may run to Long Canyon Monday the 14th in the morning. Nice Pic D! We remember to take some and post them.

PS We are not sure we can go on the 26th. Would love to go however...working on it.
I tried it yesterday, did not make it, though I got pretty far.. I will try again next weekend. If I cannot make it then, the trip may need to be delayed a few weeks.

I also had to clear a 16" diameter tree that fell across the road with my axe. That was hard work.
Unbelievable that there is still snow left. Let me know if you need another rig to scout the area.
Also would be interested to go scouting......always looking for a reason to wheel.....
