the answer is Nestor is a FJ modding God! He has All the toys. That is a Nav head unit from a '09 Camery

I assume that the Nav head unit from an '09 Camry is not "plug and play" ? lol :)

It looks really nice and you mentioned Nestor being a FJ modding God so I figure he must have had to do some serious modding to get it to fit/work :)

If it's plug and play, I may think about looking for one down the road. Do you know if the steering wheel controls and the navigation work, too?

it should, it is a Toyota unit but, hopefully he will post up as to how he managed to splice the two together, he somehow knows what will work and he does have a sick FJ

Yes, it is not "plug-n-play".

You have to find the right (compatible) Toyota JBL amplifier to convert the 16-pin (6 & 10) connector on the FJ wiring harness to the 20-pin connector on the Navigation unit. The steering control buttons are preserved.

For the navigation to remain accurate when the GPS signal is weak or non-existence( like on a tunnel) ,the VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor) and Reverse sensor wires are connected to the NAVI unit. Also, these wires are pre-requisite/needed for the 3D street navigation and voice guidance to work.

I can build you a NAVI kit if you are interested. Installation is "FREE" for Nor-Cal members.

BTW, it's very easy to integrate a backup or front/side view cameras (made by Eclipse).

Hi Nestor,

I am reading your "build" thread on FJforums as we speak, it's 28 pages long!!! lol

I'm not that mechanically inclined at all but do know basic stereo installation, nothing close to your caliber though :(

Regardless of which route I end up going, I want to say THANK YOU for offering your time.

I've owned many different cars and belonged to many car forums (Eclipse, RX-7, Supra, MR2, GS300, etc) but I must say that this board has the most helpful members and this is my first 4WD so I am a total rookie in terms of both the FJ and 4WD in general :)

Are aftermarket units easy to install? $1600 is more than I can afford right now so if an aftermarket unit fits, I may just keep a separate GPS and have the unit capable of playing movies. I've seen Alpines and Clarions for about $400 or so?

Thanks again for your generosity and your willingness in helping out a total rookie and other Nor-cal members!!!!!

RX-7s OH really I've had two of those lovely cars and lots of fun to power slide.... but we can keep this off this thread for now good to know ya hope to meet ya soon

Yes, almost three years ago, I did pay $1600 for just the Navigation unit. They are cheaper now and sometimes will show up on eBay though not always guaranteed to be in good condition/working.

The Eclipse AVN726e ( made by Fujitsu Ten /Denso, who also makes Toyota OEM Navigation unit) looks pretty good and got some excellent reviews.

Wiring harness is always the hard part when dealing with aftermarket stereo installs. Crutchfield (though always have higher prices) might or sometimes include an adapter for your specific vehicle; Their installation document is pretty good too..

The Eclipse AVN726e does look like a very attractive option since it's new and at almost half the price.

I wonder if the Crutchfield harnesses preserves the steering wheel control and if the GPS works like a factory installed unit? If not, I may as well just get a unit without navi and use it mainly for DVD movie playback and have a separate GPS.

Where did you install the side view cameras on your FJ?
