Tire Question

So now that I have just about all the big mods I want, I really need to look at tires.

I currently have those stock Dunlop AT20's with about 70% tread left (at most). I want to run these into the ground before getting new ones. I'm looking at the BFG All Terrains (no M/Ts since it's my daily driver) and probably going to stay with the stock size (which I forget what that is, but I have 17" rims).

Where is a good place to find these for a decent price? As well as a place that will install for a decent price? I probably won't be getting the tires until the summer (as long as my current ones last that long), but I want to get a decent idea about my next set.

Orrrr... if anyone knows where I can find the BFG Mud Terrain KM1's. I've always liked them more than the KM2's.

I have the KM1's and they are noisy and rough on road but are great off road. From what I've heard the KM1's are discontinued. There are a few shops out there who might have a set or 2 of the KM1's in stock. Check craigslist too.

Mark - I ran the BFG A/Ts through a bunch of trails and even Rubicon. They are great tires with good wear but they don't have as much grip as the muds in the loose stuff and some rock. I like the KM2s more than the KM1s. I have the KM2s on the FJC and they are a bit louder than the BFG A/Ts I had. I have the KM1s on my FJ40 and they are a bit rougher and louder than the KM2 but nothing compared to a Super Swamper(oi). Another thing to consider is the load rating. You can get a tire with a C D or E. C is the lightest load and E is the heavier load. The E load KM2 is noticeably heavier than my C load KM1s. The heavier the tire the greater the rotational mass and unsprung weight = less mpg, braking degrades, handling degrades, acceleration degrades. It's a toss up, heavy duty or better efficiency?

If you know anyone with a Costco membership, check out their prices. the catch with them is they will not install any size tire other than the stock size.

The way to get around this is to take your just wheels to them and they will install what ever you want. I think their price for the BFG A/T is less than $200 and that includes installation and warranty.

I have 34,000 miles on mine and they still have 30 to 40% tread left

That's Air2Air's (first name Todd) UberFJ. I think he sold it and moved on to a new project. Demello did all the fab. Apparently he put over $130k into it before selling, and he still was not done with his plans!

Hey Mark! I just kicked down for BFG A/T's. I bought the 285/70/R17's. They fill out the wheel well nicely, with a rugged but not too aggressive look. I've been getting tires (and other work) for all my vehicles from Tires Unlimited for about 10 years. They have their original shop on San Tomas Aquino in Campbell. They are currently moving to a new shop on Steven's Creek in Santa Clara. They provide free puncture repair for the life of the tires they sell. Prices are as good as Costco and service is great. If you go, speak to Gene or Jeff (the owner). For general mechanical work, see Dave (in my opinion, their best mechanic right now). Tell them I sent ya :)
