Spill kits..

What can I say its one of those items that us wheelers connot do with out. Our truck are full of it, its in the Engine, Axels, Transmissioin, Transfer case (sometimes x 2 ). I would venture to say that we all carry several gallons of oil in our truck and spare oil we bring just to operate our trucks. There is also several other different types of chemicals that we carry in our trucks, Engine collant, Brake fluid, Power steering fluid. Most of this can be considerded a petrolium product of some sort. Bottom line here is that all of this oil does great thing while in out trucks, but falling onto the ground is where the issue starts and can be one of the main reasons trails are closed.
One way to prevent this is with a spill kit. A spill kit is something that should be standard gear in everyones truck before they go out on trail. If you do spil oil on the trail a spill kit will minimize the damage done to the ground. Getting as much of the oil from the ground or preventing it from hitting the ground in the first place is key. There are several different types of kits out there, Most can be $$, but these can be good to get everything that you need all at once. I am planning on doing some research to provide some options for kits and I will post that up here.. A good spill kit should have at LEAST: 1 container ie, some kind of container or bucket to hold oil, several absorbant pads flat and round, several garbage bags, plastic gloves. Your basic mind set should be how can I contain the oil dripping out. Second, how can I prevent it from spreading, Finally, how can I clean up the mess from the ground. Its really important to clean up as much oil as you can and pack it all out. SO this brings me to my question..... How many of us have a spill kit that we carry on trail ???? I guess the diapers are not good enough. We can make our own kits cheaper then that, I'm going to look into it.

Yes there are many ways to get things cheaper.. What we did at MTA was buy everything in Bulk and then just made individule kits for each members.. It was something like 25-35 per indv kit with includes way more than the one I used for an expample. WE also have a rubber sink that can fold flat..
But Free is still the best..

i've been carrying three absorbent pads with me at all times ever since i saw some idiot leave behind a mess on Slickrock. we should all carry these as they do not take up much space. all trail run organizers will be required to make sure your group has enough on hand beginning next wheeling season.

I have been noticing talk of a few new "rules" poping up on various threads. Maybe there should be Official Lists of Required Equipment, Suggested Equipment and Procedures for NorCal runs? It might be a good idea just so there is no misunderstanding. I am willing to help put them together if needed.
I don't think we should have so many rules that it bogs us down and takes th fun out wheeling. But like the new resouces tab, the lists should have items that just make sense.
I don't mean to hijack the thread, just giving my $0.02.

good suggestion. it's already in the works and will be introduced before the wheeling season begins again. it may seem like a pain to have these so-called "rules" in place, but it will also help prevent unfortunate situations. we have been very lucky so far, but as the group grows it is better to be prepared and ready for the unexpected on the trails. i will ping you for assistance when the time comes.

I am not against rules, they definitely have their place. I was just thinking of a club that I was going to join in my area. I found out after a few meetings they had rules for everything, including which side of the trail males and females could pee. (Jeep club mostly). I am just hoping things do not go that far here. I really like this forum and pretty much all of the people I have met.

the guidelines (rules sounds stringent) would be implemented and reviewed to keep people safe and informed. for example, i noticed a few drivers tailgating each other up some steep trails in Hollister a few weekends ago. there were some gaffes over the airwaves as well. i got there late and joined in on the run midway through, so i'm not sure if a driver meeting took place or not, but things like that should be reviewed before each run as a reminder.
there is a plan in place to get newbies up to speed, so the guidelines won't seem too invasive for each trail run. and i would consider them more guidelines than rules because everyone should know them...they are not in place just so people can enforce them...they are for the betterment of the sport and for everyone's safety.

Most everything that is coming up right now is due to something else that has hppened in the past.
Our biggest reason for doing all of this is education of everyone on what should and should not be done out on the trail.
But I agree that everything should be easily located on the site for quick reference when needed..

As Boss said, there are plenty of places out there to get bulk material at good prices.
Uline, Dawg, New Pig and the likes have rolls of absorbers and pretty much anything else we would need to put kits together. 20 0r 30 kits and the price goes way down.
We could have the stuff delivered to my place in Alameda and then have an assembly/beer/BBQ day.
If anybody is interested speak up and we'll figure it out.
