FJ Cruisers of Northern California

Hi All,

Well, I wanted to give everyone a preview of my home made bumper. I have not seen anyone sport the old/new 8274/8274-50 winch on an FJ Cruiser before so I figured I'd be the first. I love the 8274 because of it's performance and serviceability in the field. The 8274 is fast, reliable, cool running, and easy to work on with simple tools. The disadvantages are larger than newer winches, heavier ~75lbs and requires the bumper to come out further to allow for clearance. The bumper itself weighs 82 lbs and is made from 1.25 schedule 40 pipe with a wall thickness of 1/4". Anyhow, I still need to mount the electrics, finish frame brackets, put on the 80ft of synthetic rope and modify the grill to fit. I'll post more pics later.

yowza!...what a beast! good stuff Romanski!
Thanks Potato... hope to try it out soon.
Looks cool..

how is it mounted??? Does it use the stock mounts??

I like the winch.. Looks stout !!
hey Boss, if you mean the bumper, then it mounts with the stock eight bolts and I'm finishing up the frame brackets that will come off the frame provide a secondary attachment points for the bumper. Bumper is stout but I won't use the winch till I get the additional brackets mounted up. It does hold 200+ additional lbs of weight jumping up and down on it (me) if that makes any difference LOL
Nice man !! I like what you have done...

did you do all the bending and welding ??
affirmative...
MAN thats cool !!!

Now you have just earned even more cool points !!
Look'n good. I'm liking the high clearance angle. Any thoughts on a rear bumper?
Proud to have you among us. Can you come Sunday soz we can get a look-see?
Looks good Roman! Any plans for a rear?
Thanks guys! I just thought it would be nice to do something different. I want to try it out ASAP but I need to get the frame reinforcements installed cause I don't think that thin metal ~1/8th will hold on an all out pull. It holds the bumper, winch, me (200+lbs) but that's nothing compared to a hard pull. If anyone needs help in building something like this, I would be happy to help but lets see how it holds out first :)

It was pretty easy to make but it took time to work things out. I bought most of my tools and supplies at Harbor Freight and contrary to what I've read, they worked flawlessly. I also have a JD^2 tube bender but all things considered pipe in this thickness is MUCH cheaper, as strong and easier to come by so that's why I went with it and used the HF pipe bender which works really well but hard to measure angles.

Rear bumper is not currently on my radar but I plan to make it from plate with a couple of jerry can holders and accessory mounts but my next project is an offroad trailer.
My goal is to have it with independent suspension 33" - 35" tires and maximum center ground clearance, sliding storage, room for 20-30 gallons of extra fuel, 20 gallons of water, small generator, propane, hot shower, sink and kitchen, and roof top tent. Lastely it needs to be as compact as possible :)
I hate to be Debbie downer here, nice winch and the bumper does look good, but....

Was the sch 40 pipe for a template and now you are going to make it out of proper tubing?
I know it "looks" and "feels" strong, but if you hit anything solid, it will go pretzel on you.

There is a reason all of the tube bumper makers use DOM tubing.

I think there is a youtube video of a home made roll cage made out of sch 40 pipe, after it crumpled some one suggested bamboo for his next project.
