Moon Rocks (Reno Nv) Sat. 0ct. 10

Meet at staging area 39°50'53.12"N 119°44'29.55"W

Moon Rocks is the popular name for the Hungry Valley Recreation Area near Reno Nv., a large open area with a variety of roads and trails in the high desert terrain. The area gets its name from the large rock formation that is next to the staging area, and is a popular play area for all types of vehicles. Entrance and camping is free, but the climate is dry and dusty, with no water, services or shade. Come prepared.

Directions From Reno, NV
1) I-80 east to 445 north through Spanish Springs
2) Continue north on 445 8 miles past Spanish Springs to Winnemuca Ranch Road 39°46'8.33"N 119°41'6.37"W
3) Left on Winnemuca Ranch Road (north)
4) Follow 5 miles until road turns to dirt
5) Follow one more mile to entrance on left at N39 51.233 W119 43.447
6) Follow entrance road in 1/2 mile to staging areas (large flat dirt parking area).

About 15 to 20 miles north east of Reno is a place called Moon Rocks. There are some interesting rock formations as well as trails. I went there once this summer and looked around for about an hour, but had to get going. The approximate coordinates are +39° 49' 19.20", -119° 46' 8.40".

I have attached some photos, but they were from my phone and are not very good.

Moon Rocks ( Hungry Valley) is cool for sure...lets go!

Take I-80 to Reno, exit I-80 at Pyramid Lake Road (445) and head north for about 20 miles to Winnemucca Ranch Road (which only goes left/west). Travel approximately another 5 miles. About 2 miles after the road turns to dirt you will see the Hungry Valley Recreation sign on the left hand side and a dirt road. Travel down this dirt road and you will see Moon Rocks on your right when you get closer.

Thanks for the suggestion, I was actually wanting to do some desert roads rather then rocks. This place looks like it has a bit of everything.

I wonder if they still do PIGS IN SPACE !!

Will the FJ be able to climb those hills? The sand must not be too soft then right? I've seen videos of dirt bikes and buggies climb over there but not 4x4s...

Its just a giant sand dune (like the beach, only with no ocean), the biggest hazard is getting sideways and rolling. Yes you can climb parts of it.

What time are you planning to be there?

What terrain are you going to do? Rocks or roads?

Probably get out there around 10, if anybody else goes I'll firm up a time.

I think I'll primarily explore the area--mostly road. The only photos and video I have seen of rocks are pretty extreme, so I'll have to see what is there.
