FJ Cruisers of Northern California

Greetings. Being brand-new to both the FJ and Wheelin'... Anyone have any thoughts on what they would consider ESSENTIAL…?? Talking equipment and mods here.

Also, can anyone recommend any beginner trails near the SF Bay Area on which to cut one's teeth?

Thanks!

that's actually a cool photo
The most popular seems to be the Scepter Military Fuel Cans (MFC). They are no longer legal in CA, so they can be difficult to get. You can get locking straps at many hardware stores.

That said, you really do not need extra gas unless you are going on some long expedition in the boonies. Gas cans on your roof will only increase fuel consumption and will make you top heavy.
no these...

The ones you posted are the CARB legal and will leak.
Problem with these cans is that you have to use the carb compliant spout with them. That spout is a pain in the ass and spills more fuel then the fumes it prevents (kinda ironic).

The good cans are the military scepter cans, which you can not buy legally in California.

As 5AND5TORM brought up for almost any run your going to do they are kinda pointless unless you are going out for a long expedition. You don't want to carry them around on your rig full since a they are dangerous in an accident and they raise the center of gravity of the rig if you have them on your roof figure it's about 6 pounds per gallon of gas (8lbs for a gallon of water) so depending on how many you carry it's 30 or more pounds of static weight on the roof of your truck. Plus driving around with them around town kinda makes a rig look like a mall crawler. (just my opinion)

Never carry filled fuel cans inside your rig.
Now you tell me !

Well a picture is worth a thousand words
I have bought some inexpensive 5 gallon tanks at Target. They work really well and I cannot smell any odor even if I put my nose very near. As I do not have (and I am not planning to get, at this point) a roof rack, I carry the tanks in the vehicle.

My friend has bought a metallic one and yes it was leaking and he could smell vapors all the time so he had to hang it outside his Jeep.

As I said before, I would never go to the Death Valley (or to the Mojave etc) without some 10 gallons of additional gas.
If you want to go somewhere like the Death Valley having more gas is almost mandatory. The FJ has a tiny fuel tank (always better than a Jeep anyway).

Once I was offered 30 bucks for 4.5 gallons of gas near Lippincot pass. I accepted 25 only :)
get good sliders first, they protect you from door dings as well as rocks.
I have a couple of the septers and I am happy with them. I have never used them on the trail. They sit at the house filled waiting for the power to go out so I can fill up the generator. I got them form a Military supply store in Canada. They were able to sell them and ship right to my house. I am not sure they can still do that anymore. you can find them used. Check out ebay..

But I agree, Get sliders or a high lift. they will some in more handy that a gas can..
