Hi: what is the difference in reliability between a hole in the tire fixed in a shop and with a "DIY" kit? I understand on the trail it is vital to quickly put a patch to be able to go back home, but if I am at home already, should I fix it myself or go to the shop?

I'd suggest if you've never patched a tire, then do it your self so you know how to do it if your out on the trail.
Absolutely. Anyway, the question was: is this kind of patch somewhat less reliable than a shop repair?

How much cement (if any, I've seen people not using it) should I apply?
On the trail you would just plug it with a cord, unless your sidewall was ripped of course. At home take it to a shop and have them patch it on the inside.
X2 on the shop.. They will take it off and patch it from inside. this is the best way to do it because they can clean off the inside before they patch it. I had this done to my orgional tire on the FJ after I got a hole in the tire and I never had another problem with it.

Of course on the trail you would use a plug if the rip or tear is not to bad just like red rock said.

It should not cost that much.

Pit makes a point. It is good to know how to patch a tire. Maybe we can have a how patch a tire demo at one of our next meet and greets..
I agree, take it to the shop if you're home. Plugging a tire is easy though if you want to see how check this video out Alessio.
Damn that is a bald tire :)
You still do not have this fixed? I thought I was the most lazy person I knew!
