Has anyone ever had this issue where your fender starts to crack? I guess people with 2007-2009 FJ had this problem..It would crack even from not off roading..I have 2014 and I was wondering if I should be worried or have they fixed this problem on the newer models?

WOW, 2014 take it back to the dealership.  they need to deal with that defect.

No I don't have the bulge but I'm seeing people have it on older model FJ's but I was just curious if they fixed it for the newer models...

Hmm I have a 2008 but it was well taken cared of before I got it. I will be checking for this issue though in a bit.

Where is that on the vehicle?

Try this Toyota has made revisions to the engine bay inner fender aprons due to some bulging and cracking issues with 2007 and some early 2008 models. The bulges and cracks in the inner fenders were attributed to a Toyota design flaw through certain Vehicle Identification Numbers. Toyota has addressed the problem and has changed the design.[24]

My first reply was not allowed! maybe cos I quoted Wiki? This is from wikipedia

apologies if this is a duplicate post.

Thx!

Holy cow!! Any particular area of the fender I should look for this? I bought a used 2007 in February and want to make sure I don't have this problem. Thanks.

I have a 2007 with some fender rips in it. I am yet to find a solution I am willing to tackle.

Yes, the fender bulge is real, and the crumple zone tear is real. It is easily spotted near the firewall.

I had my inner fenders replaced under warranty. Firewall to radiator. They did upgrade the inner fender, in 2010(?). The newer fenders have a 3rd sheet sandwiched in between the original two sheets, and there are fewer crumple zone indentations in the inner piece.

I have a friend that is a Field Service rep for Toyota, and it looks like there are several factors that causes the problem. It is true that people who haven't offroaded have had the problem, but the problem is most evident on ones that have.

#1 - The stock suspension allows the tires to contact the inner fender on a hard landing, causing problems.

#2 - The frame isn't stiff enough, and the front body mounts are too stiff, which means that when the frame flexes, the flex is transferred to the fender, and absorbed by the crumple zone indentations. Eventually they crack and tear.

#3 - After market Bumpers and Winches are heavier, which amplifies frame flex.

I wouldn't worry about a 2014, but if you have a 2007, 2008 or 2009 I would look and monitor it.

Good Luck and enjoy

I got the bulge and cracked inner fender. Sucks. :-/
