I was reading another forum and one of the threads pointed me to a bunch of articles written by Bill Burke, one of them was about the basic gear you should have to start and the Hi-Lift Jack was at the top of the list. I was reading a thread here that stated its useless for stock FJs? Can/should use rock rails with this jack or is it's only use a poor winch on a stock FJ TT? Unless I also buy the wheel adapter. I have a factory installed hitch but I'm not thinking that should be used to lift anything, let along pull (LOL). Thanks in advance for any advice.

+1 for the TRDparts adapter. I ordered one a couple of weeks ago and it was here within a few days. I haven't used it in anger but it looks OK in every respect.

I'd also be interested in a hands-on recovery session. It's all very well knowing the theory of how things are done, but there's no substitute for having actually seen it done by someone who knows, and then doing it yourself.

I would be willing to teach a recovery class if anyone is interested. There is no substitute for hands-on use of all of your recovery equipment.

A small group of us is putting together a trip to Hollister the weekend of August 24th. I could do it there. Depending upon the size of the group, I wouldn't need much more than three hours.

I'd be up for that.

As far as a Hi-Lift jack point, if you use a Lift-Mate, you can lift from the wheel and keep the jack away from the body. Seen below:

That's a really great place to put the jack unless you're changing the tire! ;-)
But to get off a rock it's perfect to attack a few rocks under the wheel.
