i wanted the manual but i ended up with the auto cause the wife wanted one. ... i really like the auto. it drives great and wheels great.
If you plan to wheel it, auto is the way to go. Modern autos also get as good or better mileage than a manual. Some folks like manuals and in the end you need to decide what your preference is.
I have a 2012 manual 6. Here are my thoughts after having driven a auto for many years. If you use this for a daily driver and sit in traffic you may want the auto. With six gears the first one is really low and the second a little to high for constant stop and go. My foot seems to never leave the clutch.
I do like the manual for engine braking for steep hills so I can keep off the brakes. More fun and interactive to drive rather than just get in and hit the gas.
I don't know how it is for extreme off-roading as my off-roading adventures typcially don't involve rock crawling or other 'obstacle courses' but rather just getting off the highway and seeing where the day takes me. It really comes down to what you enjoy driving more.
It's really a choice of personal preference. I won't drive an auto - it's a woman's transmission. (JK? ! ;))
WIth that being said the auto gets 21mpg in 2wd, but the manuals are full time 4wd, and get 17mpg.
What are you used to? I’ve had manual 4x4's since, well, it's been awhile. My FJ is an auto. It still seems odd to me since I've mostly had manuals. As noted, traffic sucks with any manual, but I love them on mountain roads. Off-road, I miss the true feel of the engine. Downhill a manual is best, uphill I prefer the auto. Bottom line, what do you want.
Auto.
Makes it easier to hold both your cell phone and coffee while you are driving on road or off...... ;-)
