New FJ, new to wheeling
Hi everyone,
Just wanted to say hi and introduce myself. I had been nagging my wife for a new FJ for a long time and she finally let me buy a 2012 TT a couple of weeks ago for my birthday. I told her it would be our family adventure vehicle. Have been watching lots of you tube videos lately with my kids and we can't wait to try some to those stuff we see. Of course, no extreme off-roading just yet. I'm still trying to figure when I will use Atrac, R diff lock and the works. I'm trying to see also where I can sign up for some instructions on off-roading.
I've always wanted to try to go off-roading in the past but never had a vehicle as capable as this. Currently trying to research and buy recovery gear for now before we start venturing out. I'll probably stay as close to stock as possible, but will most likely get some upgraded skids. Have to get approval from the "moneyger" first.
We're here in the peninsula-South SF. I hope to be able to meet up and join you on some trail runs in the future.
One question I have for you guys and gals, do I have to wait for break-in before I take it off-road? Still only have about 400 miles so far.

Welcome and nice color choice. As far as the break-in period, I wouldn't know but I am sure someone on here would have a idea. I bought mine used with 18k. Put 600 miles the following weekend exploring, lol.

I would recommend another 50 miles to feel safe about taking it off road. Hey, I am just kidding : ) I didn't hit my first real dirt until I was heading off to Moab with 3,000 miles. I bought mine on a Thursday and was off-road on Saturday. But that is just me. If you are not comfortable then don't do it.
I think 1,500 miles was the beak-in period.
And welcome BTW.

No real reason to wait. Might as well start using it, as there are no "break in" issues noted in the manual.
I'd stay local first, hit up Hollister Hills when a few people go down there. It's a nice place to start to get a feel for the vehicle.
ATRAC -- My feeling is that this should be engaged anytime you are off-road. A lot of people prefer to try to drive through things with out it, just to challenge themselves a little more. ATRAC pulses the ABS, so when it is working, you'll hear sort of a shudder, but that's normal.
Rear Locker - You'll probably use this much less, if at all. it's there when you need to have the rear fully engaged always. One thing about ATRAC is that it doesn't work if you're foot is on the brakes. So when you are doing more extreme things, you'll probably want it on.
Recovery gear - ARB sells a complete kit for about $300, includes three straps, shackles, gloves, etc. You'll probably want a winch. And a shovel. Get a shovel, even just a small folding one.
Your tires are fine for now. in many cases just letting some air out will get you unstuck.
