Yosemite's Big Oak Flat Road ("Hwy 120") closed--for some time

Last night there was a major rock slide on Big Oak Flat Road.  A lot of folks inaccurately think this is Hwy 120.  If you are familiar with the area, it is the road between Crane Flat at Yosemite Valley.  It knocked out the road, the base, and ground underneath.  The major rock was "the size of a two-story house."

Below is a Facebook public link to the NPS FB site, if you want to see some photos.

No estimated time to reopen.  Many of us are guessing, it will be at least weeks.

Hwy 140 (Merced/Mariposa/Yosemite) is the best alternate route.

I can't believe I've been on that twice in the last month. Thanks for posting.

Thanks for the intel.  We where looking at a quick down and back to the Valley Floor this weekend.  This route looks a little rough for the FJ.  We will check road conditions before hitting the road.  May consider plan b and develop a plan c.

I thought it a bit odd that the news said it was on Hwy120 1000 feet from the valley floor. That must have shook the ground pretty well.If there’s a landslide in the forest, and there’s nobody there to hear it, does it make a sound?

It happened about 11:30 Sunday eve.  The remainder of the boulder almost made it to Highway 140 below it, and can be seen from there.  Park rumor is, if the weather allows, it will be at least 90 days before the road opens.  Nothing confirmed tho.

wow crazy....know exactly where that is...spent my honeymoon 'based' in Foresta...

as i'm in merced and come up the river canyon i'm always amazed at the slide down there where the whole mountain side came down a few years ago....

News late yesterday was, the area appears to be stable, and they have started removing the debris.  The road is in better shape than they thought, still not good, but much better.  They can get emergency vehicles thru, which is always a good sign.  With the good weather, they are kicking tail with the project, and there is a chance of good news sometime next week.  Just sayin....

View of release point and slide from near the Wawona Tunnel.  (NPS photo.)

Note at the very bottom of the slide (lowest edge of the photo), you can just see a bit of the El Portal (Hwy 140) roadway--below the closed road.

Cool pic. Looks like it took out a few trees too.

Oh yeah.  Falling granite is almost always stronger!  ;-)

Man, it is a shame no one was there to see it. What an experience it would have been. But I am glad no one was hurt. Hey Yose, are you a Park Ranger there ? I'm a Ranger for Marin county on the coast. I work with the NPS folks now and then from Pt, Reyes Nat, Seashore.

Nope, not a Ranger.  I work for the company that provides the majority of guest services here.  I'm the chief of the Security and Fire Dept for them.  We have 10 paid call firefighters and our own engine, along with about 20 security officers...not the mall cop type, more like Community Service Officers in a PD.  In addition to the pro-active stuff, they handle injury investigations, crashes, noise and theft issues, etc.  They are an active group.  My dept's website is: www.YosemitePark.com/Security
