Tire choices

I am getting ready to buy some new tires for the FJ. I am thinking of either the Nitto Terra Grapplers or Goodyear Duratraks.

Have any of you out there had any experience with either of these brands? My rig is basically a camp and 4 wheel rig-not a daily driver.

My question is how do they perform on and off the highway and do they have decent life (mileage).

I am also open to other suggestions in tire brands that you have had good luck with.

I don't think you can go wrong w/ the Nitto TG, great tire for the $. I was going to get those but they had an 8 week back order at the time (lots of people must want them). I ended up getting a deal on the Mickey Thompson Baja ATZ. I love them--they have a very deep aggressive tread, yet not much noise at all on hwy, just enough hum to remind you that you have some awesome shoes.

If not a DD I would go with the DuraTracs A little more agressive while still being an AT.

How is the road noise with these tires.....louder than the normal AT but still tolerable on a long trip? What kind of tread wear do you get?

This is based on my recent study as I am in the market. If my use was mainly off road I would put tread wear and noise at the bottom of my concerns. I believe the noise is minimal though.

Have you considered the new BFG MTs? I've had them on for 25K miles, and they still have tons of tread left. And they perform really well off road.

I have really been looking into the Goodyear MTR's.. Great looking tire and I have heard good things from people that own them.

Plus they have Kevlar, and to me thats just cool !! LOL

I currently own a set of Hankook MT's . I got them used with about 12,000- 15,000 on them. I have since put at least another 55,000+ on them. They are very worn but I am VERY surprised at how many miles they have taken and still have tread left (Not much mind you). My FJ is a DD and I would guess that I am about 90 % or more on road use.

I am also in the market and I have found that ebay can have some good deals, just watch if they chage you for shipping, some do other will shipo for free.

Tire Rack dot Com has some very good prices and Shipping was free when I was looking, Not sure if that was just a special or not.

Same scenario with the Hancooks. Used, got them in Moab after a side tear on the Revos. Still have about 5/32 left. Getting ready to pull trigger on the DuraTracs though. Or TGs ...Hmmmm.

Before you commit to any store, call Sam from Tire and Wheel Zone at (209) 460-0786 and ask if he can price match or if he can get you the tires of your choice. I recently purchased a set of M/Ts (285/75/16) for $599 installed. It was worth driving all the way to Stockton.

I have seen this guys ad on Craigslist. I did call and talked to him, asked him a couple of questions and he seemed like a nice guy over the phone.. Read some reviews of this shop and most people seem happy.. I am not sure exactly what he can get though..
