I've always looked at the SPOT Satellite GPS messenger as a neat device and I've looked at getting one but it is a fairly limited device for the price and the service cost. Last year I came close when they released the SPOT messenger that worked with the Delorme PN-60 it was a neat combo allowing you to update twitter a but at 600 bucks really expensive for what it is. The PN-60 is a neat GPS unit but doesn't have serial NEMA out which for me is a requirement for APRS, so I decided to hold off since I couldn't see spending that much to update twitter, and replace a decent stand alone GPS I already have.
Well it looks like they are now releasing a bluetooth version that will work with mobile operating systems like Android and I would imaging iOS as well. So the ability to send location information to someone in your contact list when your way outside coverage is something I would personally dig.
I think this 3rd generation device might finally make me pull the trigger on a SPOT since they are saying the device will be 169 and service 99 a year.
