Just a simple question for all you guys attending surf n turf this year.  Is everyone camping out on the dunes or is anyone staying at a hotel nearby?  Just looking to get an idea of what I should plan for.

A hotel seems like a better option for me, as my girls back is kinda tweaked right now and camping isn't the best idea right now, but I'm thinking I would lose out on some of the night activities if so.  Does anyone know what time pismo closes and if it's fully closed then or if I can just leave later after closing.

Anyways, what's everyone's overnight plans for pismo?

I dont know personally of anyone staying in a hotel, but health is important so if that is your best option I say go for it.  You can probably find out what time the gates to pismo close on the web site.  And yes, if you dont camp out you will miss out on some fun.  Would a good air matress do for her back?
Thats kind of what I thought about missing out on what goes on at night.  I'll have to see what kind of mattress's are available.
they don't close the beach, it's open 24/7. the guards get to the entrance at about 8am and check for passes.
With a Day pass you have to be off the beach by 11. The fine for staying on the beach after 11 is 320 bucks.
Pay for the weekend, it's $10 a day I think. Then you can come and go off the beach as you want.
That sounds like the best option.  I'll verify what the price is and probably go this route.  Looking forward to pismo!

to all the people planning on camping at SNT remember there will be wind and fog and maybe even rain so pack and plan accordingly

camping (i sleep in my truck) and you definately will miss some of the action if you go to a hotel....but you'll also be wayyyyy more comfortable.

I was thinking of staying at a hotel last year, so glad we camped at the dunes.  Our tent was about a 1 minute stumble from the group's fire.  We would have missed out on all the fun if we'd stayed in a hotel.

I stayed at pacific plaza resort last year.  Its the closest hotel to the gate.  It was 110 per night, condo style with a full kitchen., living room, bed, bath, fireplace.  Laundry was free also.  I stayed as late as i could driving the dunes then headed back to the hotel to sleep.  I did miss the mornings there though, but my wife cannot stand the cold.

sleeping on the beach is definitely not for everyone and some choose to stay at the local hotels. either way, we've all still had fun during the day and into the early evenings.

if you want to stay on the beach, but are worried about the wind and dampness, the Flying V (aka Taj Mahal) does a relatively good job in breaking the wind (and it doesn't even smell!). there are other ways to prevent your tent from flying away, etc. as well, so just voice your concern and we'll tell ya how it is.
