FJ Cruisers of Northern California

Location: Kyburz, CA
Event Type: trail, maintenance
Organized By: DWH
Latest Activity: Oct 15, 2012
Long Canyon Trail is one of the 42 trails that have been closed in the El Dorado National Forest this year. Since NorCal FJs has a volunteer agreement with the forest Service, we will be allowed to perform our trail maintenance duties in spite of the closure, In order to do this, I have to fill out a Special Use Permit with the Forest Service.
A .pdf file of the trail closures can be found here:

I am shooting for Sunday, 10/14 since there was a request for a Sunday run last time. This will be subject to change depending on turnout. I would like to get as many rigs as we can, up to about 10 or so, to show our continued support of the trail.
This time I am going to try to add a second trail to the run, Cody 4x4 trail, which is also on the closed list. This is also an easier trail than Long Canyon, but has some cool scenery. We will add this one depending on time and permission from the Forest Service.
Please post if you want to join in.
Here is my standard stuff regarding the trail.
NorCal FJs has adopted the Long Canyon Trail in the El Dorado National Forest and it is time to do another clean up run. We need to get one more done before the trail closes in late November.
We will meet at the In-n-Out Burger in Placerville off of the Forni Road exit at 10:00AM. I plan on leaving the parkinglot by 10:15.
You will need to fill out and turn in a Volunteer form before you will be allowed to participate. The form can be found at: http://norcalfjs.com/forum/topics/adoptatrail-longcanyon
If you have filled one out previously, you do not need to do another one.

Some trail information is below.
The trail is not hard. I have taken numerous first timers in stock FJs with no major consequences. Rock rails are required for the second obstacle. There are a total of three obstacles. The first two have bypasses, the third does not. There are also a couple of fairly steep climbs and an area with many 6” to 10” rocks to navigate. Again, nothing a stock FJ cannot handle.
A map of the area can be downloaded here:
http://www.fs.usda.gov/detail/eldorado/maps-pubs/?cid=stelprdb5357470
Placerville Ranger District Map - Side 2
Trail head coordinates are approximately:
38 45 N 120 15 W
If you are running late and miss us, getting to the trail is easy.
Continue up Hwy 50 toward Tahoe, just past Kyburz (about 30 min. from Placerville) take a right on Silverfork Road
A few miles up Silverfork Road, take a left on Long Canyon trail (dirt road)
Communications
I will have a CB on Ch 31 and 7/31 on FRS. HAM Frequency is 146.460 no tone.
See http://norcalfjs.com/group/comms/forum/topics/norcal-fjs-band-plan-aka for standard group communications.
Bring a lunch and plenty of water.
Mobile phones do not work well in the trail area, except at the top.
Be prepared for changeable weather.
Comment
It depends on the amont of rain. If it is a light rain we will go. If it is a downpour, we will likely do more harm than good on the trail. Especially with a dozen vehicles.
I have been monitoring the forecast, we should be fine.
Crazy Question but one I always have to ask. Is this 'Rain, Shine, or Snow'? Seems like the weather is changing after our scorching week.
Whenever I backpack we always go regardless of weather. Makes for an adventure. Does that apply to trail maintenance?
If you have a CB, FRS or HAM radio please bring them. If you do not have one, don't worry about it, it is not a requirement.
ok im new at this but does my wife have to fill out a form as well? or can i put both of our names down? Also who do i send the form into?
yup it looks like the wife and I can make it if you'll have us? It will be my last weekend in the states before I have to go back to work. I going to fill out the form now!
Thanks SJFJ 4x4 and DWH! I will just be extra careful while I am up there. I too am thinking of camping up there on Saturday night to save the drive early on Sunday.
Oh No! Not Pollywog, that guy is a wacko.
Hi DWH, the volunteer paperwork for both myself and my son went out via snail-mail yesterday, they ought to have it by next tuesday at the address on the link. Scanner out, snail-mail wins!! I am guessing that, as administrator, you will receive info from NF concerning validation?
Steve.
Hey Sandyann, I'm a newbie, too, but I've heard lots of good things about this trail. I don't plan on messing up my rig so if I don't feel comfortable, I'll just watch everyone and then take a detour, haha.
Form submitted, thanks
