I used to really be into backpacking, hiking and a little rock climbing. Ice axes are good for stability while going uphill on glaciers, packed snow, etc., as well as self arresting in the event of a fall, cutting steps in the snow in alpine environments, and setting belays (depending on the type of axe). I thought the end of the strut resembled the spike on the end of some axes.
