Transfer Case 6MT

Hey everyone,

So I've been looking for the right transfer case to make my 6MT part time 4 wheel drive.

I make very little use of the Low gears unless I'm trying to get out of a tough spot in the dunes so having very high gears is not too important ( stock is fine ).

What is my best option to make my fj part time 4WD? Auto t-case? inchworm? older gen t-case?

There are a number of things you will have to do in order to make a 6mt a part time 4 wheel drive:

the transfer case from a AT has higher gearing than the MT so you may want to think about a Inchworm,

you will also need a disconnect for the front diff from a AT FJ, and some wiring and operate it

What are you trying to achieve by going to part time, increased gas mileage?

You'll also need some way to disconnect the front hubs or your front gears and drive shaft will spin all the time. The part time kit for FZJ80's includes manual hubs.

If it is just for gas mileage i would consider spending the extra $$ at the pump, even over the long run the net difference may be less then what you are thinking of doing :-).

You don't need a T-case swap for the 80's conversion to part time do you?

I've never read up on the automatic diff disco before.... kind of interesting way to handle engaging 4wd. Only one side actually disconnects and the other stays connected and spins that sides spider gears.

Gas mileage wouldn't hurt but that's not why. I just don't understand why the 6mt fj was made an AWD in the first place. I just want to be able to make the decision to be in 4wd or 2wd. It's just something I've wanted to do since day 1 and if I'm going to be putting a lot of money in this fj I want it to be just how I like it.

From what I've been researching the inchworm seems to be the best bet but I'm sure there is a less costly way of doing this.
