FJ Cruisers of Northern California
I recieved my 2012 FJ with 6 miles on the odometer and a note from the selling dealer advising an oil and filter change at the first 5k, then every 10k after that. I performed the first service and re-filled with synthetic oil as per Toyota reco's.
I have reviewed the blue boards with mixed results, some ok with 10k some with horror stories.
I realise Toyota have engineered their product to go 10k on synthetic and all synthetic manufacturers have reco's between 8k and 12k between changes. Seems lengthy to me. How do you all feel?
I suppose it will depend on useage? highway,stop-go city driving, slow hard off-road?
How do we all regard oil change intervals? Whats your feelings? Appreciate comments.

I think that was good advice. I change the filter every 5K though.
I used to do mineral oil and filter changes at 4500 miles on my old S-10 blazer and that seemed to suffice. I was hoping to go a bit longer on full synthetic, maybe 7500+ But I am boggled by the idea of 10k+!!!!

I would add that some studies show manufacturers that specify very long oil change intervals have overestimated the life expectancy of the oil. By the time these engines reach 100k miles, they show symptoms of the kind of oil break down that results from not changing it often enough. I know synthetic oil has a longer life, but? Is 7500 miles a good number?

Ya that's good. To revise my previous, I change oil every 8K and filter every 4K. (typo)
We are on the same page
Thompson's Toyota in Placerville charges 24.95 for an oil change. I get it done every 5K. It is probably not synthetic oil though. I see them about 4 times a year.
No, cannot be synthetic for that price. And there is the bargaining chip for synthetic. Toyota reco 0w-20 full synthetic because it gets the mpg up. And can get 10k. The price is high though, I paid over $5 a quart for two cases online. Cheaper than Royal Purple and Mobile1 but with the same Ilsac standards.
I would hope synthetic outlasts mineral based on engineering standards, but having a difficult time expecting 10k between changes. Will pose the question to Click and Clack, if they havent retired yet!!
