FJ Cruisers of Northern California

Hello All,

Just picked up my fist FJ.  It is a 2013, AT, Iceberg.  Love it, love it, love it.  Had Jeeps and pickups in the past.  The FJ is much more the vehicle I've always wanted.  I'm in Southern Marin and my typical getaways take my up to Mendocino National Forest.  Forest service road M1 is a favorite.  Love the view from on top of Hull Mtn.  When vacations allow I head to the Sierras, mostly the eastern side, and the Siskiyous.  Favorite destination of all is the Sonoran desert of Arizona.  I look forward to connecting with the community here and perhaps joining on some trail runs, etc.

I'll be looking to do some mods to the FJ.  Definitely a bumper, winch, lift and tires.  I've begun searching the forums here and at fjcruiserforums to help me decide on which lift to do and which tires will best suit the type of driving I do. I'm leaning towards either an OME or a Toytec Ultimate lift.  Just want to make room for 285/75's and keep good articulation.  I don't do any high speed desert running.  As for tires, I have no idea yet.  Seeing as how I need something that can handle both occasionally mucky roads in the forest as well as the rocky roads in Arizona, not to mention the hundreds of miles between home and the trails, I suspect I'll just be looking for a darn tough all-terrain tire.  If anyone has any initial thoughts or suggestions that will help guide me in my search it would be greatly appreciated.  I'd also love assistance in finding a great shop here in the SF Bay Area who can install the lift.

Glad to be aboard.

Cheers,

Scott

Congrats Scott!  The stoke of driving these just increases with time!   As far as tires,  I am on my second set of Nitto Terra Grappler AT's and I give them high praise.  Next round I might go with some Falken "Wild Peaks" just to change it up.

Thanks Cowboy.  I'll take a look at the Grapplers.

WELLCOME!!!!!

Welcome aboard. You picked the right truck and the right forum. No doubt you'll pick the right upgrades.

I have the EMU and Duratracs. No complaints with either.

Welcome and congrats on the FJ!  I too run Nitto and have generally loved them.  I had them on an F150 Supercrew and now on the FJ.  Very stable on ice and snow even when running at higher speeds on icy highways in Central Oregon.

I took the FJ off roading in the Sonoran desert and loved how the Nitto handled in the sand.  I did run into a problem with the cactus though.  Got a little crazy and ended up with some debris (Mesquite and cactus) in the sidewall popping the tire.  I wonder if the BFG's would have a stronger sidewall?

If you want the best sidewall protection I recommend the Goodyear Kevlar.
