FJ Cruisers of Northern California

Now that i have started to go on harder trails with my mods i have.I am really scared S**Tless about breaking my Ring and Pinion gears. So much that i don't want to go wheeling intill i can save up for a Dana 60.So how many of you have broke them.My 3RD built date is 12-26-06 . Should i be this scared?Should i just have the ring and pinion gears replaced with a good company gear set or should i not really worry to much about it and just keep driving it.Thanks in advance sorry to be a sissy but i normally go wheeling alone to the middle of nowhere.

I say run it until you break it.
X3 Drive and have fun.

Just fix her when she breaks... You will drive youself crazy trying to make everything bullit proof. There will always be a week link in the system...
If your auto, go break it before your warrenty runs out. You can see how to do it on the dec 14 holister video and you can hear what it sounds like too. I put my lift on at 2500 miles and that "voided" my drivetrain warrenty.

Oh and AAA premiere took Lemony and me home ~170 miles for free... I thought it was a scam when AAA called and talked me into upgrading the week before but I worked out great.

I've seen 8 or 10 break. Only one left us in a bad place (top of the world in moab), but luckily we had a spare.

I personally went through 7 of the older 4cyl diffs in my 4runner.

Am I worried? No. I run 5.29 geared FJ Cruiser Diffs in my current mini truck with 35" tires, and a 228:1 crawl ratio.

It is also possible to run an older 4cyl toyota diff in the rear of an FJ to get you off the trail. I have one in an elocker housing sitting in my parts pile if you need a picture. It basically involves removing 3 studs, using copious amounts of RTV, and install an adapter to go from the 4cyl flange, to an FJ flange (or use a 29 spline pinion... then you can swap on the FJ flange. I have 2 in my scrap pile if anyone needs one).
