FJ Cruisers of Northern California

Ok, so I started to hear a noise a week or so ago when driving into a driveway or over speedbumps diagonally. It basically sounds like something is loose and makes a clunking sound in the rear end. I have a 3" suspension lift frome revtec and thought to look under the truck to see if I could spot the problem. I did see that both rear shocks were loose and could be twisted back and forth. Figuring this to be the problem, I took my FJ to 4 Wheel Parts here in Modesto and they looked it over and said the problem was some missing washers?!?  They said it was fixed and checked, didn't even charge me...  Happily I left and drove towards home... only to hear the same noise still at each turn on a bumpy road and driveway. FRUSTRATING.  I got home and took hold of the rear drivers side tire and shook my truck side to side and could mimick the same clunking noise manually from either side. Has anybody run into this before? It's almost as if the wheels are loose from the way it sounds and feels. ( I checked that just to be sure ) Any advice would be appreciated! I couldn't really get under the truck to check their work as it's been raining all evening...

This is just my advice so take it for wha it's worth.

-start with the basics, make sure all of lug nuts are torqued properly.
-if you have had any recent mods done, make sure all new nuts and bolts are in place and are tight.

After you rule all of this out it's just a matter of getting in there and figuring it out.

I'm in Turlock if you want to stop by
Aye that is sound advice! After i installed a lift i had some horrible noises coming from the rear...was driving around the block trying to figure out what it was..turns out my rear wheels were about to fall off because i forgot to torque them down after I finished the rear springs!

Be careful!

I'd hate to hear a story about how someone's wheel fell off.

LOL
Didn't this already happen?  I forget how and when..?
That is not something that is fun. I was doing 65 down 580, heard noise got off at the next off ramp and the was 1 lug nut holding my front passenger wheel on. The rest had sheared off. Be sure to TRIPLE check torque any time you work on or remove wheels to be sure.
Also make sure to seat the wheel correctly onto the hub. The wheel can still fly out with proper torque procedure if it is not on straight.
So now my wheels may fly off... Super!!! I think I'll just rotate my tires. They're due anyway. Soonest I'll be able to check on these ideas will be tomorrow. I have to take my son up to Roseville for a medical apt. I will NOT take the FJ for safety reasons.
Yeah, I was able to pull my truck into the garage at work where it's nice and dry this morning and slide around on my back shaking it side to side. The noise only happens when the truck shakes side to side and the shocks are now nice and tight. It seems like there may be a bit of movement around with the swaybar? The bolts seem tight not that I have had a chance to torque on them yet... Maybe a bushing? I'll have to play with it more later. Thanks for the advice and offer for help. I may head that way if I can't figure this out soon.

The sway bar moving when you shake the truck from side to side is normal. It acts to resist body roll. A noise could be anything and can be very frustrating because so many things can cause it. Other moving parts are brake cables. Try moving your truck again from side to side and look for the brake lines that are guided through the hoop which are connected to the frame rails. Those make a squeaking noise when they rub along the inner part of the loops when the body moves around.

Again, it could be anything. Try that one to see if that is the cause of your noise.

Thanks, I'll try that after work.
I just removed the rear sway bar when I did my lift. I've had no issues in 4 years
