FJ Cruisers of Northern California

Hey Everyone,

Anybody know of some good locations to shoot some guns? Im talking about unsupervised. I remember seeing a video on this forum (I thought it was deer valley) where they did some off-roading and then popped off some rounds in an area with a creek and lots of gravel. I know of cow mountain, haven't been to the range there but have heard it can get a little scary with stupid kids mixing alcohol with bullets. Anyway, thanks for the help, was hoping to go this sunday.

It's right behind the Milpitas Police Department off Milpitas Blvd.  Personally, I've never been there.

I usually go up to the el dorado national forest and go down a remote trail. The following info is from http://www.fs.fed.us/r5/eldorado/recreation/shooting/

SAFETY IS YOUR NUMBER ONE PRIORITY!

Safe Location - Know where your bullets are going at all times. Choose a remote road or area. Are there people around, trails, roads? Is there a safe backdrop for your targets and bullets. Shorelines with rocks are unsafe locations due to bullet ricochets.

Targets - Bring your own targets and clean them up afterwards. Trees, critters, buildings, and signs are not appropriate targets. Pick up your brass, shotgun shells, etc. when you are finished.

Water - Water surfaces will act like concrete and ricochet bullets. There is no reason to be shooting into the water and is considered unsafe. Keep this in mind when choosing a location. You could injure people on the other side of a cove or lake. It has happened.

Wilderness - Firearms are not prohibited in the wilderness but do not lend themselves well to the remote, quiet wilderness experience. Please respect others and keep your target shooting outside of the boundaries when possible.

Firearms
You may NOT discharge a firearm or any other implement capable of taking human life, causing injury, or damaging property:

  • In or within 150 yards of a residence, building, campsite, developed recreation site, or occupied area,
  • Across or on a Forest Development road or a body of water adjacent thereto,
  • In any manner or place whereby any person or property is exposed to injury or damage as a result of such discharge. (36CFR 261.10d*).
I usually go to EDNF as well, most national forests have the same rules as stated above. Good info. Be safe :-)
Generally any BLM land is open to shooting. You DO need to be mindful of where your rounds end up, as in not someone's cattle, home over the hill on the BLM bordres, etc.. I live in Modesto and shoot on BLM land up near the ghost town of Hornitos. There's a ton of acreage to wheel and shoot, you just have to watch out for old abandoned gold mines. There are a few private properties that don't take kindly to 4 wheeling, but they are all bordered by fencing. Good luck!

I shoot at Target Masters in Milpitas or at Los Altos Rod and Gun Club on Skyline blvd for range shooting. For unsupervised places BLM land is great, as was noted by Meester Jim. Where are you located-what city I mean?
