FJ Cruisers of Northern California

I had an errand in Red Bluff, so looked around for something fun to do in the area and found this trail. It's in the Northern California Trails book (NS44) and some others too. I found it fairly challenging, harder than Lippincott for example. There are several very steep (~30%) slopes with a mixture of loose earth and stones, and deeps ruts down the middle or sides. But FJ took it all in her stride, never once slipped or spun (except once when I forgot to engage the A-Trac). The really steep uphill parts I did in 4L with A-Trac and Diff Lock, everything else in 4H.
The area is incredibly empty and very beautiful. Most of the time there's no visible evidence that humans ever existed. The trail is mostly in the Ishi Wilderness, named after the last survivor of the Indians in the area.

I did this 3 years ago while on a fishing trip to Antelope Creek.
I don't recommend Hogsback Ridge, long boring and too many basketball lava rocks to avoid.

We went straight there on Rt 36, figuring that otherwise we might be fed up with bouncing along on washboard before we even got there. Sounds like we made a good (lucky) choice. We originally planned to finish up by driving down Ponderosa Way to Chico for the night, but after about 5 miles headed south on Ponderosa, with another 40 or so to go, we were indeed trail-ed out and decided to cut our losses and head back to 36 and use 99 to get to Chico.
