FJ Cruisers of Northern California

Hi, I am writing a program to read out the OBD-2 info out of the FJ and display on a computer, using a 13$ interface bought on ebay. I now have various parameters like speed, RPM, temperatures of intake and coolant, MAF etc etc

Do you know if there is any non-standard PID that may be of specific to the FJ (or Toyota) that can deliver interesting information?

I am NOT trying to do an application do "clear codes" or deal with any engine malfunction. Only to get and display data as if it was an "extended" dashboard.

Thanks!

You are a genius
Dude could you clear my fault codes ?? LOL

Thats a great idea.. But I am curious, if you do not plan on changing any settings than what is the advantage ??

Unless you are going to use this just as a display, which is cool cuz your writing a program to accomplished.......
There is not much one cat "set". At least, that I know of, with the standard "PID"s. Yes it is like a kind of "monitoring tool" only.

PS if you need to "clear a code" I have a ScanGauge II we can use next time! But clear the code only will not fix issues :)
Naaaa I do not have a fault I was just messing with you... LOL
That sounds awesome! I run a netbook in my FJ so it would be interesting to be able to monitor vitals with it as well! Let me knwo how it goes.
OK begin to get one of these :)

I am going to add a mileage calculator and a decent trip computer. I will upload a screenshot as soon as possible. Which OS do you run on your netbook?
Interesting!
A really stripped down version of XP, mostly because the topo software i run uses it.
Ok I will have to try to compile it for windows also. Yesterday I let my friend drive so I could test and experiment a bit (without the engine running it's difficult to "understand" the meaning of all the parameters).
The prototype works quite well so far. I will add a screenshot when it's more graphically acceptable.
what is a PID?
OBD-II PIDs
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

P-codes, or OBD-II PIDs On Board Diagnostics "Parameter IDs", are codes used to request data from a vehicle, used as a diagnostic tool. These codes are part of SAE standard J/1979, required to be implemented in all cars sold in North America since 1996.

Typically, an automotive technician will use PIDs with a scan tool connected to the vehicle's OBD-II connector.

* The technician enters the PID
* The scan tool sends to the vehicle's bus (CAN, VPW, PWM, ISO, KWP. After 2008, CAN only)
* A device on the bus recognizes the PID as one it is responsible for, and reports the value for that PID to the bus
* The scan tool reads the response, and shows it to the technician
yes that's it
