FJ Cruisers of Northern California

Hi! I had my 4th damage to the windshield and this one seems too big to be repaired. I do not even know how it happened, I left the FJ in a parking lot and I found it with a big crack that has been expanding over the weekend.

I am a little uncomfortable in having the windshield replaced but at least my insurance only has a 100$ deductible... I have read changing this glass might require new moldings, or maybe not, what do you think? Advice for a good glass center anywhere in the Bay Area as long as it is really good? Or should I bring it to the dealer :( ???

How is it possible this windshield cracks so easily? How can I prevent this from happening again when I get the new one?

The FJ windshield gets damaged so easily because of its steep angle.  Instead of glancing off of it like a more angled windshield, things tend to hit more squarely.  The key to a new windshield is to make absolutely sure you replace the plastic clips on the two small panels on either side as they will break  and the driver side one will fly off.

Do you think that bug-"wing" (I do not know the technical term) mounted at the front of the hood might help? In any case do you know a good shop that knows what it takes or should I use a dealer?

Thanks! I think I will try that place in San Jose.

I think a bug deflector will only be effective if the rock directly hits it.  other than that, I dont think it will enough upward draft to deflect a fast moving rock with more mass than a bug.

I'm on my third windshield, a good window person with Fj experience is a must if you want the molding to be able to be reused. It's one of the few downsides to owning the coolest off the showroom 4x4's  :-)

My insurance company sent me to Atlas Auto Glass. I verified with them they had FJ experience before I took it over. They did a great job, I watched most of the process. It took them about an hour.

Well I've taken an appointment with the guys in San Jose, I "interviewed" the guy at the phone and he was extremely confident, he explained the process like it seems it should be. Did they replace the top trim part in your case?

glass on the move

hooked me up give them a call

Auto Glass Masters in San Jose quoted me $261 for a windshield replacement reusing the top molding. i got their info from someone on the blue room posting in a norcal shop thread. they seem pretty good and i think im going to give them a try unless someone else has somewhere better and cheaper?

My insurance, AAA, had Safelite come out to the house.  Two guys, and all the needed replacement parts.  It didn't take them long at all, and no cost to me.
