FJ Cruisers of Northern California
I need to have a rear tire carrier fabricated onto my Metal Tech bumper. The stock tire carrier just isn't holding up, and the last time I was out wheeling it bent. Also the weight is causing some serious creaking and groaning when I try to open my rear door.
The summer is quickly approaching and I cant really do much wheeling without a spare available. Sooo.. Anyone have any recommendations for someone I can take my truck to? I'm in San Jose.
Thanks

Matt is a good guy and does some amazing work. The other guy I have used is FC Fab in Stockton. Look up fc187 on Pirate4x4 and you'll see his artwork. He is backed up until mid-summer at this point.
Thanks for the link, I checked out their site. They seem pretty good, but unfortunately Cool, CA is just shy of 3 hrs away from me. Its a bit too far.
Much appreciate though!
Im waiting for Metal-tech to release their swing out....
What size tire are you currently running that is causing so many problems? I have a 305 on a 16" wheel and so far its been okay.... I do have a modified spare tire mount though, since the current metal tech bumper is a little higher than the stock and wouldnt let the door close.
Im running 35's on 17" rims. The spacing of the stock mount to bumper is sufficient because I added a 1" body spacer. So it fits as well as a 33" tire would. I think the overall weight of the tires/rims is the issue, it has dented my bumper and bent the carrier and bolts to the point where threading the nuts on is almost impossible. I really need this taken care of.
Id love to have the MetalTech bumper all in one, but unfortunately they are super slow to make them. I've even contacted Red Eye fab in Nov asking for some custom work, but I think Mark is either too busy, or just not interested. (his bumper design is the one being produced by MetalTech if you didnt know)
yeah..... I agree that its taking them too long.
Well best of luck with your tire situation!
in the mean time you could run your spare on the roof maybe?
How about Bay Area Metal Fab?, I called them last Nov, and they sounded like they were trying to put together a metal rear bumper/carrier for FJ's but told me spring 13 at the earliest. Maybe they can fab something for you.
Roof rack sounds obvious if you spread the weight, but hauling a tire down from there will be fun off-road, or anywhere else really, youd need a small army to get a tire off the roof of an FJ, or a forklift!! :-)
Steve Hope.
Haha no kiddin! When I had the tires put on I had to lug 2 of them on the roof rack, that alone, without rims was a pain to maneuver around. Ill check out Bay Area Metal Fab and see what they can offer.
Santa Clara is close. Do you have any contact info? Website?
