FYI....one of the trails will include a stop at one of the hot tubs (Saline Springs, I think). Anyway if you choose this option, be prepared to see nakedness (not necessarily from our forum members - apparently it's a given that you are likely to see someone au naturele at the tubs). That being said, no children on this particular run, but you may want to bring swim suit/trunks, towel....or just go buck naked. : )
All right, I have a list of trails. These will not be too difficult, as long scenic trails usually are not, but 4WD will be useful. We have four long, expedition style trails, one medium length trail, that will include a hike (to a waterfall), and a two very short trails, in the afternoon. We will experience high desert to high elevations. Volcanoes, ghost towns (3 of them), tramways, tunnels, lava, and hot tubs. We will be running three trails twice to give everyone a chance to experience all the area has to offer.
In addition to the trails, there are other activities that you may enjoy. There are streams for fishing, Manzanar National monument (a Japanese interment camp memorial), Whitney Portal, just 4 miles West, Horseshoe Meadows, which is a paved road the switchbacks up the side of the Sierra Nevada’s, mountain biking, and other activities.
Here is the schedule:
Saturday:
Darwin to Cerro Gordo: This trail will start at the ghost town of Darwin, and then travel down into Panamint Valley. Participants will then hike up a ¾ mile trail to Darwin Falls, an oasis in the middle of the desert. Afterwards, travel up Hwy 190 for the stunning views at Father Crowley point. Then the run will get back to dirt, travelling down Lee Flats road, to the back entrance to Cerro Gordo, a pristine ghost town at 7,000’, then finally back to camp.
Swansea-Cerro Gordo: Begin at the base of the Inyo’s to the summit at 10,000’ along the way there are stunning views of the Owens valley and Saline Valley, as the trail straddles the ridge between the valleys. Along the way, there are mines, and historic cabins, a salt tram, which was once the steepest in the world. The trail ends at Cerro Gordo ghost town.
Mazourka Canyon-Papoose Flats: Start just outside of Lone Pine, dive up scenic Mazourka Canyon, until it reaches Badger Flats at high elevation. Then cross over a mountain pass and into Papoose Flats. This landscape is surreal, with pinnacles shooting up out of the ground. The view offers a great scene of Mount Whitney. Then descend into the narrows, a high walled canyon, which eventually exits at the Northern entrance to Death Valley. From there, feel free, to head back to base camp, or take an optional detour into Eureka Valley to see the Dunes.
Spert’s Gigantic Eruption Run: I put together this run out of several trails that cross the Owens valley, though lava flows and cinder cones, making for a spectacular up close view of the volcanic history of the area. Starting at Big Pine, we will head west along a cinder cone, to the base of the Sierra’s. Then we will take a side run up to 8,000’ vantage point, with a view of the entire Owens valley. We will head South, and then East, where we will then drive across a lava flow, and then back towards the base of the mountains. This second half will contain water crossings, craters and cinder cones, so close you can touch them. 4Wd is recommended on this run.
Afternoon Runs:
In the afternoon, we will offer a couple of short runs.
Movie Road: This is a self guided tour, of the Alabama Hills, an area that has been used as background to hundreds of movies and television shows. Pick of the self tour map at the visitor center in Lone Pine.
Reward Mine: This short run, takes you into an actual mine. Groups will be escorted into the mine to avoid a log jam. If anyone wants to do some shooting, there will be an area. Unfortunately, rigs must not be lifted over 6” or have roof top tents, in order to enter the mine.
Sunday:
Saline Valley: Details TBA. No children
