In NEEEED of HEEEELLLLLPPP!!!!
Ok so here is the scoop, I was changing the Rear diff fill plug because my old one was in need of changing. so i went to the local toyota dealer and picked up a new plug. I backed the old one out and checked its threads. nothing wrong. I put in the new one, went in smooth went to make sure it was tight to spec wouldnt tighten. at this point I am like WTF?! so i back it out again with ease no tension no feeling of cross threading and looked at the bolts. Some how the new bolts thread were completely bald i check the threads on the fill hole... and they are toaaast! So now my perdictiment is i need to get the fill hole threads repaired. I know it is some how my fault and honestly i have worked on many many cars and what not and have never had this happen so i feel doumb as heck right now. does any one know how i can repair this or does any one know of a shop that can fix this for me were it wont cost me an arm and leg? really really need help...

I dont know of any shops but on the ship we use a kit called Helicoil. You buy the kit specific to what threads you need and it comes with a unique drill and tap kit that will tap out the hole larger then you thread in what looks like a spring (use loctite on the outside threads) and the inside threads of the "spring" are perfect for the threads that got messed up. I looked online just now and they are easy to find. hope this helps. Im sure someone on here knows the specific thread size for you to order. Good luck!

thanks ill check that out sounds like id have to take the diff apart to do it? what with metal shavings right?

Yea definitely. But if you are comfortable with that and are handy with a thread tap it's a fairly painless procedure. Better than replacing the whole thing.

i hear that This will be my last resort if i cant find a shop that will do it i have a feeling that iam going to end up having to do this myself so thanks for the point towards helicoil.

No prob it happens. There is a reason I know about helicoil, I've used the kits a few times myself.

I have used Helicoils as well. I am not sure they will work in this instance. I think they work better in a hole with a bottom, rather than a through hole. I could be wrong though.

They make "tangless" ones but they are harder to put in because you cant use the insertion tool. The tang that goes across is made to be broken off with a little effort. Sorry that is a good point and I should have mentioned it. To help richard out, is anyone close to him that could give him a hand with this?

Why would u change a drain plug? The aluminum washer yes but not the plug. Looks as if the dealer sold u the wrong plug.

it was the fill plug and the head was all jack to hell i was amazed the old plug came out with out having to use vice grips or something to turn it.

Can you get the original bad head plug to go in or even start? You may be able to re-tap and get some good threads in the housing.
If not then (some research will have to be done) perhaps find another plug similar to the original size plug but a bit larger in Dia. drill, tap , done
