FJ Cruisers of Northern California

My MAF Aux fuel tank sending unit needs to be re-sealed (using great stuff).  I need to drop the tank, seal it, and re-install.  There are only 6 bolts that need to be dropped but it's hard to hold the tank and remove the bolts at the same time.

Is anyone in the local area going to be around over the next few days who would be willing to help?

Thanks

Hey Peter,

I'm waiting for a call which would put me in Tracy in a few days. I could come over from there. I will call you as soon as I hear.
Thanks for the offers but I think I got it. I dropped the tank, re-sealed the sending unit, and replaced the hose from the filler tube to the aux tank and the vent line. Hopefully that will fix it!
Hey this tank is very interesting. I must say I do not use the FJ too much, and even less now with the baby approaching, but when I go it's in very remote areas.

Could you tell me more about it, how well it works etc?

They tested the Diesel Passat and it made 2464km with a tank... I am so jaelous...
The filler tube that fills you main tank gets modified. It gets 3 Y's in it. One Y steals fuel from the filler tube and fills the auxillary tank, 1 Y is used as a vent, and 1 is used to dump fuel from the aux. tank through the filler tube into the main tank.

The aux. tank is 19 gallons and fits under the FJ. An electric fuel pump pulls fuel from the aux. tank and pushes the fuel through the filler tube into the main tank. This is done with a switch.

It's a great mod. if you like having an extra 19 gallons. There are some problems with the system

1. It's for OFF ROAD USE ONLY --It's not street legal and not CARB approved
2. The FJ does a pressure test every 48hrs and if a leak is detected (it happens) you get the "4 lights of death" These can be removed with a scangauge.
3. It's expensive. I forget what it cost new but it's about $2500 if you buy and have MAF install it. I installed mine and I didn't find it to be that hard.

FYI- the FJ is going to be released in Australia soon and these guys, http://www.oot4wd.com.au/=80Series.asp are already saying they are going to make an aux. tank for it.

I hope this helps. I tried to make my own once and it was costly exercise that ended in frustration only to buy a MAF tank (used).
Problem solved (for now). No codes.
