FJ Cruisers of Northern California

Was not sure where to post this.  I recently just got use of a 2 horse bumper pull trailer. It weights 2800 lbs. My horse weighs 900. I need to get the rig ready to tow. When i went into The dealership they said they do not do electric brake kit installs, do not have them factory or the 7 pin connector I need to attach to the trailer. Now I think this is BS as my dads Tundra has a factory 7 pin. What goes into making an FJ horse trailer with electri brakes ready and is there someone that I can hire to do an install for me? Do I need a transmission cooler? And yes I have the tow hitch.

I have a 2008 auto 4x4

I installed the OEM trailer wiring kit for 4 wire and then used a kit I got from etrailer.com to make it 7 wire... following their instructions at http://www.etrailer.com/question-17596.html.  IIRC, I passed the wires up a bit differently than they suggested (under the door jam, into the jack compartment).   I also wired it for aux-power.   Works great.    etrailer also sales complete kits.  I used the OEM 4 wire as it's basically plug and play.

While I don't think you need a transmission cooler, you should be careful of your gross weight limit!   You'll be close once you add it water/feed/etc., and all your stuff in the back of your FJ.

When towing, I suggest you don't use cruise control... it will kill your MPG.

You will definitely need a brake controller, not just an adapter. The FJs brakes won't do it.

I installed the one on my FJ, It is not complicated. Also purchased mine from etrailer.

I bought this one: http://www.etrailer.com/Brake-Controller/Tekonsha/90885.html. It seems to do the job. You may also need a wiring kit, I cannot remember. The people at etrailer were pretty helpful when I called.

oh I know I need the brake controller! besides the wiring kit and brake controller is there anything i need? Someone was telling me about a bleed line?

I am not very mechanical. I kinda have guy freinds or my dad do the mass of my installs. I am pretty limited to tire rotation and oil changes. I like learning my brain just does not think really mechanically so its easy for me to get confused!

I am not sure what a bleedline is. It sounds hydraulic and all of trailer control stuff is electrical. I believe the wire kit and controller are all you need.
