Fly Fishing...Noob

I would like to learn the art of fly fishing. I don't have the rod/reel yet either, but I don't know where to start, what to get and not to get, what's garbage, etc... The only thing I have is a pair of waders handed down to me.

Is there anyone here I can hit up (maybe via phone or in person) to help out? Any advice would be appreciated. I'd like to get a a setup going and start doing it instead of dreaming of doing it. Thanks everybody.

I have bought some el-cheapo fly fishing set ups. And caught huge/ small fish with them. If you are looking @ entry level equipment. Absolutely, go to Bass Pro Shop in Manteca and buy your set up there. I wish I did. Plus, they have an epic selection of flies like no other.

Yeah, I have a Big-5 and a Walmart special. They are junk compared to what they have at Bass Pro. I am thinking $70 will get you something that's not embarrassing. I highly recommend getting a set up if you plan on hitting some summer runs with us. You never know when we are going to hit a stream. The next All Cal is a "Trout Friendly" : )

Talk to the guys at Orvis, they're in Santana Row. They have some entry level gear and some high end stuff to drool over. They have free beginner classes. There are casting ponds in Campbell along the creek trail.

You will need a stealhead card for some rivers so be sure to check the regs.

Depending on where you live there are often fly shops that are willing to help. Just know that at the end of the day they are also very willing to help the,selves to your pocket book! If you are serious about it start there. My local shop offers a beginners intro class that walks you through everything you need to know to start. Of course gearing up is the easy part, catching fish is the tough part! Tight lines!
