FJ Cruisers of Northern California
So i'm adding a trailer (i promise i will post more details on it at some point in time) to the overland setup. Now the trailer has a battery (likely a DH platinum PM-1). The FJ also has a dual batter setup (yellow optima).
The question is do I run the second battery on the FJ (optima) to the trailer battery(PM-1) thus having the FJ Second battery and the trailer batter running in parralell. I imagine this would have several benifits:
1. Longer Run times on accessories
2. Reduced impact on batteries (potentially longer life?) as they would rarely go to a deep discharge state.
Anybody see any issues with running this setup? Recharge would happen while the vehicle is on and essentially be taken care of by the dirty parts dual battery setup which would charge the batteries while the vehicle drives but otherwise keep them isolated.

Is this a full size battery your running in the trailer, or a one of the small batteryies meant to run the trailer brakes?
If its a second automotive battery, then a potential problem if both batteries arn't the same (i.e. optima deep cycle and factory toyota), the weeker battery is always going to draw from the greater battery.(actually, this is true regardless of the batteries, but will discharge quicker if the batteries are mis matched.)
If this is the setup you have, then i'd suggest running a battery isolator like the dirty parts setup you have. I know you said you have one already installed, but thats just isolating the main battery from the second battery.
Trailer battery would be a full size (group 31) Die Hard Platinum Deep Cycle which would then be connected to the Optima yellow top. They are not identical...but are both deep cycle AGM batteries.
That whole setup is isolated from the main battery via the isolator.
Ohhhhh What are you up too??????? Pic ASAP please!!
I am not an expert and I have yet to install that dual battery set up in my rig (I also have the dirty parts set up).
I guess you would have to think about what you were running in your trailer, and your FJ? Also what do you plan on running in your trailer while camping? Like lights, Fridge, Ipod, whatever.
It should all work just fine. Of course there are those who say (I believe this is painless wirings view, but don't quote me) that the second battery should only be kept as a back up to the first and used when the other is dead. So nothing else should be hooked up to it. Of course there are several people who have done just this. Most of the people I know have wired a fridge right to the second battery and to the best of my knowledge this has worked out well. I believe I will do the latter (wire to the second battery) when I finally get around to wiring in a plug for me fridge.
Only other issue I could think of would be the Alt output. I would think that if somehow all three batteries were drained, the alt would have to do lots oh charging. I would check to see what is the max load the Alt could take. But I doubt it would be much of a problem.
Here is the sneak peak :-)
Now...as for the batteries...i guess i'm using the dirty parts mentality for the DB setup
Primary: Only for accessories that run with the vehicle (ie aux lighting) and starting
Secondary: Only for accessories that need to run with the vehicle off (IE fridge)
So for me The secondary set would include Battery #2 (FJ second battery) and Battery #3 (Die Hard Marine Platinum). I think the Alt output is worth investigation, i'll see if i can't look into that....now with a full charge I should be able to run w/o an alternator for a bit :-).
OOOOOOOO A tear drop !! Those are very nice!
That kind of looks like a camp-in tear drop. If so those are damn nice.
I almost got one may year ago when I first got into OHVing. But since I keep making kids I would have quickly have outgrown this.. hahah
I still hope to get an RTT for my M416.. One day.
I cannot wait to see your set up out on the trail..
Its a Socal Teardrop Krawler 459(http://www.socalteardrops.com/page.php?p=22), they make the teardrop for adventure trailers. You save a few bucks if you don't go with the fancy suspension :-).
Plus I drive like a turtle so i wouldn't get all the benefits of the AT trailer!
