FJ Cruisers of Northern California

Took my FJ to the shop last week for a loud whine in the rear end, found out the ring and pinion bearing was shot to hell. Mechanic swapped it out and when he took it for a test drive he engaged 4H an 4L and then locked the diff. He tried to disengage the locker and it wouldn't. He too it apart and put it back in and had the same result. Obviously it's getting power to lock but when he tries to unlock it nothing happens.

Has anyone run into this issue?? If so I could really use your help!! I need my fj for my bachelor party in pismo next weekend

I would check the switch on the dash. It is a SPDT ( single pole double throw ) Push in once to activate, push in again to de-activate. Check the fuse and relays too ( sometimes relays go out, or can get "lazy"  ie late switching. but unless you have a pinched wire ( could occur during rear end re-build) I would check that dash switch. There are also interlocker switches related to the throw of the transfer case lever, ie diff lock will not occur unless in 4L on auto transmission, its another switch to check, but Im going with my first thought, the dash switch. I hope its not a bad replacement diff, was it a new one or a rebuilt one? Got to make sure your mech is following the Toyota diff replacement protocol regarding torque settings, gasket types, fluid type and amount etc.

Let us know what you find.

is any of the wiring exposed at the plug for the locker ( haven't been under it to check)

Ha, my truck is in the shop for the driveshaft TSB warranty work so I cannot look .It is normally all watertight for sure. Mine is also covered by the Boztec rear diff skid, I think that has a plate that protects the electrical for the locker.

If its locked all the way in, they never instantly release. They need to get that perfect no load so it can shift.

so if I were to a large enough bump, do you think that would be enough to have it disengage? the tech engaged it drove it, turned off the locker and drove a short distance and could not get it to unlock

fj is now at Gearmasters in San Jose, the tech there thinks it might be the second relay in the locker, he said he would know by tomorrow mid morning, I'll keep you guys post! Crossing my fingers it will be good to go, if not, then I'll have to rely on A-trac if need be

no reason to rely on A-trac, as good as it is, you have to fix the locker and have both.

Steve.
