Hey all,

A few days ago i found a fun little trail called Blackwood Canyon/ Barker Pass OHV. I found it because my girlfriend and I had planned to go hiking at the top of Barker Pass (awesome views of lake Tahoe and just fun all around hiking). The road up to the hiking trail head is just the same as any mountain side road, so when i saw a sign for and OHV trail that looked like it lead in the same direction i was all for it. It starts out very easy( just driving on a gravel road) then gets progressively harder as the trail winds up the mountain. There are lots of dirt mounts to go over and plenty of loose rocks on steep inclines to negotiate. There is one semi-challenging obstacle towards the end of the trail, all it really is just a rough rock slab with some sharp edges pointing out of it (hard to describe, ill post pictures). Besides that, the trail overall is pretty easy. Nothing a stock rig couldn't handle with the right tires. It's nothing to take a trip for really but if you're in the area it's a good way to knock out an hour or two of free time.

Directions from Tahoe City: Go south on highway 89 out of town for about 6-7 miles. Turn right on Kaspain road (the street comes up fast out of a turn so watch out for it). Follow that road for about 2 miles or so until it makes a hard left and goes over a bridge, at that point, take the fire road straight instead of turning left on to the bridge (very easy to spot). follow the fire road as it turns into the trail in about 500 yards or so. After that, put it in 4wheel drive and have an awesome time!

I was there on the afternoon of wednesday the 4th and the gate was locked at both top and bottom. If you continue west on barker pass rd when you get to the top, and take the second left it will take you past bear lake and on to the last part of the rubicon trail. Richardson and lost lakes are nice stops along the way.

Awesome! I will definitely check that out next time i am there

Hey, I may have passed you driving North on 89 just before Tahoe City on Monday, July 10th in the late afternoon.  I was in a Subaru but figured it must have been someone on the site.

Ya that was me! Im in and out of tahoe city all the time whenever im up there

So about how long was this journey?  A couple hour trip or worth making it an overnighter?

The trail itself only takes about thirty minutes. But there a ton of hiking trails at the top so you could go backpacking if you wanted. So to answer your question, no not worth making an overnighter
