FJ Cruisers of Northern California

We are considering a trip to the Big Sur area for a couple days--just to get away from work and all.

I just checked Trails.com, and didn't see anything in the area.  Anyone know of some off-road (gentle) trails, or just public access dirt roads that have wonderful views of the area, where we could kill a couple hours on a drive?

Yes!

Nacimiento Road off of Highway 1. Take that far enough and you'll get to Coast ridge Trail/Plasket Ridge Road, which goes up to Prewit Ridge Campground. Nothing crazy... just some awesome views!

I found this really awesome map of trails in CA. You need to have Google Earth to view it. So get Google Earth (its free) Then download this .kmz file, open the file and explore the trails as on overlay on the globe. It is REALLY cool

Great map!

Thanks for bumping this thread up.  You're right, it's a great map.

Botched nailed it. Nacimiento-Fergusson Rd. It closes from time to time so heads up before you go out. Head to Cone Peak and get some amazing views. Word of advice... Don't take guns on the road, or at least have them in plain view. A lot of the property is a military res. it's ok to drive through, but you may get checked at a gate down the road... Worth it or the views.

Thanks all!!

Any guess-timate of about how long (time wise) the turn off is from the state park in Big Sur?

Try Coast road from north end of Bigsby Bridge to Andrew Molera state park just north of Big Sur. Just a dirt road winding through the redwoods paralleling hwy 1. Follows along a pretty part of Little Sur River at the split of North and South fork. Just a nice diversion from hwy 1, and gets you to the same place. Also if you do Nacimiento Rd be sure to check out the mission at Hunter Leggit base (Mission San Antonio) - kind of like going back in time. The last couple of times I've been there the gate at the base check point has not been maned. Also at the base the Hacienda built by W R Hearst prior to San Simeon.

Thanks!

Check out the coast ridge route( southern end). At the southern end it starts a few miles north of ragged point and ends at the nacimento rd. A great drive that will get you some spectacular views of the coast in some spots...if it is clear. plan a couple three hours for the ride.
