Auxiliary fuel tank

One of my greatest dislikes about the FJ is the size of the fuel tank. I wish that it had a larger or even an auxiliary tank. I know man-a-fre makes one and it looks very great BUT I don't have $1600 extra dollars to buy one. I've been thinking about trying to come up with something that might work for much cheaper. I've looked at some 10,15, 17, and 20 gallon aluminum fuel cells that are available from $165-240. I know that it would be a lot of work to make it fit the FJ but I bet if some one really put some time into it they could get something that would work for under $500.

Has anyone attempted this before or thought about it?

I have no doubt that the man-a-fre product is worth the money but it is just out of my reach.

At about 13mpg I looked at the manafre and it looks like it sticks out quite alot, combined with zero rear visabilty and my crappy driving I figure it would be a bash tackular mod once popped. It sure seems like there is lots of room behind the rear axle to stuff a tank in but I wouldnt want it to be the first thing i hit backing up.

I agree with all that you said. There's room back there for a tank. It doesn't have to be huge. Even 10 more gallons would be great. 10 gallons for $500 would sell.

I was looking at the fuel cell thing myself, found a couple that were only 7" deep, I think it was either 10 or 12 gal, on the summit racing site, it even had a built in sending unit. Would just need to figure out a transfer pump and a Y in the filler tube to fill it. At 7" it would only stick down below the frame about a inch or so.

The filler tube is the hard part. If we can figure that out I think we have it.

Any thoughts on where to start. I know MAF did it but I would guess that they wouldn't just sell that or even tell us where they got it.

I think I found a transfer pump that should work at summit.

I've read about a member in the blue room that imported a prado fuel tank and made that work. But we're talking so $ to do something like that. If you figure something out, let me know, cause I'm interested too.

Yeah, the Y and also running the vent lines back into the system to keep it sealed is the trick, keeps the dash lights happy. I'm seriously looking at this but won't be able to do much on it till after the Moab trip. I'll look around and see what I can come up with from some industrial suppliers.
