I think most people here go for the full monty (steel bumpers) when they change over. The full bumper setups are more practical on the trails and provide protection. The grill guards tend to be more for looks.

 

I guess what I am saying is you may not get the answer you are looking for here.

Cypilk can probably tell you the most about brush guards as he had one on his truck.

 

On FZJ80's the grill guards are known as damage multipliers since they are not very strong and will take out several panels if they are bent.
