FJ Cruisers of Northern California

I'm considering changing the CV axle instead of just the boot, and then repairing the boot at my own leisure on a workbench.

The question is, does anyone have an aftermarker brand they trust? The OEM's are around $400, and the aftermarkets are around $70- $90. 

Many choices, but I have read horror stories, and no one specifies their brands.

I currently have the master pro select one and have no complaints so far its been on for almost a month now actually looked beefier then the stock ones

How hard has your offroading been with it in?

trail blazing an meduim crawling seems like a good CV

This sounds good to me. I have an Oreilly that has them in stock nearby.

rockauto has one for 40 ish bucks but i have heard they are what you pay for and not so great

Well I had to put the Empi one on when my sway bar link snapped on the Rubicon last year and shredded the boot. The half axle was about the same price as the boot and I was able to get it faster. I have no complaints. It was noticeably stouter than stock, and I took a photo to show that (but pictures rarely capture enough detail). In case you were wondering what the zip ties and stuff were for, we did manage to keep some significant bearing grease in using ziplock bags and zip ties on the trail. It kept me from poluting, and kept me going up the rocks a long way. It took a while as we had to drop the skid plates to take off the sway bar and stuff, but in the end we made it through just fine. Those sway bar stop collars suck though. They seem to be made of lead or something and just clamped on. A few rock bumps and they loosened enough to kick the sway bar link and break it. I bought "stronger replacement collars that tightened with allen screws but they sucked too so I just welded them in place. Now it is stout! After all that I may just take off the sway bar next time I'm on that level of trail. Anyway the EMPI half axles were great, and I've had no issues since the install. When you hold them up to stock you can tell they are tougher by a long shot. I found them for $100 shipped and they were at my doorstep in a couple of days. Putting them in made me realize I needed to upgrade the links too and I found some great thick ones with Zerk fittings for cheap. Now that it's done, my only regret is not buying one for each side so I could save the one good one as a spare.
